Length of USB extension cable to connect the 3G USB modem to laptop
Hi guys
I have a strange problem. I use a USB extension cable to connect my 3G USB modem to my laptop to get a better signal strength. With Windows this works perfectly but with Fedora if the length of the USB extension cable is more than one & a half meter, it doesnt get connected to the internet. Fedora detects the presence of the modem but simply doesnt connect. I wonder if any one else has got this problem?.
Thanks
Anish

Hmmm, looks like no one uses a USB extension cable to connect the modem to the Pc.

Have a look at the packages called tuned and cpupowerutils.
You can get them under the add/remove software or yum if you prefer the command line.
You will be able to change the way fedora is conserving power on your laptop.

Re: Length of USB extension cable to connect the 3G USB modem to laptop
I am not sure if it is caused due to the power not reaching the modem. The laptop does send power to the modem through a 2 meter USB extension cable. I can see the LED lights blinking on the modem when I give the modprobe commands. I am not sure if the rest of the data signals being sent is recieved by the modem/laptop. Any way I will have a look at those packages. Thanks for ur reply, I appreciate it.

Re: Length of USB extension cable to connect the 3G USB modem to laptop
Hi
I guess I was using a faulty cable. It works perfectly with a new 3m cable!
Regards,
Anish
