How to uninstall nouveau?

I am trying to install the official NVIDIA driver, but it is complaining that nouveau is installed. I tried to yum remove all packages related to nvidia and nouveau. What else can I do?

If you are using a F16 kernel you will need to recompile it without the extra debugging.

I added rdblacklist=nouveau to the kernel arguments and the NVIDIA installer doesn't complain anymore. However, it now just says "unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module". I have done yum install kernel* , so I should have the kernel headers, etc.

What do you mean 'recompile it'? How would I do that?

I ran the
yum --releasever=15 distribution-synchronization

that you suggested to get me back to F15. Then I started with

rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0 3

and the NVIDIA (270.41.06) installed seemed to work. However, when I go to Settings where I would plan to add my second monitor, X crashes (signal 11).

I then tried

sudo yum install akmod-nvidia

but it complains

Requires: akmods

What should I do from here? I just want my system back
