Exclamation Question about Fedora 14 DNS server!

Has anyone experimented with DNS on Fedora 14?
I install Fedora 14 DNS server on VMware for internal network. Domain name Karrox.tk .When done, XP client can ping to server's IP, but it can't ping to Karrox.tk, only this DNS server can use DNS .
In Cent OS, it is OK!
Has anyone successfully installed Fedora 14 DNS server on Vmware - could you help me!
Sorry for my bad English, thank in advance!

Re: Question about Fedora 14 DNS server!

Works fine here.

Does the client configuration point to the name server?
Is the domain registered? - When I do a lookup on karrox.tk I get
several IP numbers, but none of them can be reached, and the reverse lookup fails.

Yes, it does!
I set up this DNS server for LAN not Internet. I used Cent OS and i try Fedora on VMware.
Is there the differences between set up DNS on Cent OS vs Fedora ?
I watched some videos on Internet and i see no differences between them ( sorry Fedora older version is used in that videos).
Thank in advance, Jpollard

Re: Question about Fedora 14 DNS server!

On a small lan, where bind may be overkill, I personally use dnsmasq. It is very easy to install and configure and works like a charm.

Re: Question about Fedora 14 DNS server!

What is in the client configuration?

If it is missing a "search" or a "domain" (I happen to have both), then the name being looked for may have the wrong domain search key- it may be using the default domain the client is in, which may not be the same.

My configuration has:
Code:
domain home # put here by network manager
search home # put here by network manager, both domain and search are defaults
nameserver 192.168.1.1 # my name server defined by DHCP to the ISP router
nameserver .... # IP number specified by DHCP
nameserver 192.168.0.8 # my local nameserver (caching only) for the LAN
This way my local lookups (done on the server) go immediately to 192.168.1.1
Other systems on my lan use the cache provided by the local system.

Client is Windows XP, how to config it ? My configuration: IP = DHCP (10.0.0.20) (I've installed DHCP server), DNS = DNS server 's IP (10.0.0.1).
Network configuration in DNS server:
Nameserver 10.0.0.1
Domain Karrox.tk

Please help me ! Thank you!

Re: Question about Fedora 14 DNS server!

That should be all that is needed on the client.

Does the firewall on the server permit access to the DNS port?

Code:
>service iptables stop
iptables: Flushing firewall rules: [ OK ]
iptables: Setting chains to policy ACCEPT: filter [ OK ]
iptables: Unloading modules: [OK]

Re: Question about Fedora 14 DNS server!

IPtables is the Linux firewall. There are GUI based controls that can allow "trusted services" to access their needed ports.
