    Network service is not running.

    Hello Friends,

I use fedora 14 and when I'm trying to run the network service on my system it gives me the following error -

    # service network restart

    [FAILED]
Shutting down loopback interface: Error: Device 'lo' not found.
    [FAILED]
Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up interface eth0: Error: Connection activation failed: Device not managed by NetworkManager or unavailable
    [FAILED]

Re: Network service is not running.

F14 uses NetworkManager by default. So unless you've switched try 'service networkmanager stop'

hefeweizen, you mean to say that first I have to stop the service by executing 'service networkmanager stop' and then restart the service again.??? Is that what you mean?

Re: Network service is not running.

No, you only have to stop one service. However, the service you need to stop isn't 'network', it's 'NetworkManager'.

    You described this:
    Code:
    [root@example ~]# service network stop
Shutting down interface eth0: Error: Device 'eth0' (/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/0) disconnecting failed: This device is not active
                                                               [FAILED]
Shutting down loopback interface: Error: Device 'lo' not found.
                                                               [FAILED]
    This is what's required:
    Code:
    [root@example ~]# service NetworkManager stop
Stopping NetworkManager daemon: [ OK ]
The 'network' service is legacy and F14 has been updated to use 'NetworkManager'.

Re: Network service is not running.

Remember, just running "service XYZ stop" or "service XYZ start" is only temporarily going to change service XYZ for that boot up, to do that permanently you'll need to use chkconfig:
    chkconfig network off
    chkconfig NetworkManager on
or use system-config-services (use the Enable/Disable buttons to do the reboot start/stop and the Start/Stop buttons for the service start/stop)

Re: Network service is not running.

Thank you Marko! I have been wondering for weeks why I kept getting a "failed" state on network.service, not realizing that I could just disable it and be fine with "NetworkManager.service" alone.

btw: I realize this is an old thread, but I felt overjoyed with the information here that I just had to share it, and to thank you. I love Fedora
