F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
I just tried installing on an AMD64 with 512mb of memory. II downloaded F15 LXDE livecd x86_32 bit version and it boots to the live screen okay. When I click the Install to Drive icon, the mouse cursor spins for a while then it seems to stop doing anything, as far as installing.
Any ideas why it will not install to hard drive? No error messages are anything showing and the live version continues to work. It just will not install.
Is there a command I can add to the boot option? Is there a way to install from a console? I believe since the machine have only 512mb of ram, Gnome 3 may be too slow for everyday useage.
Thnx.

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
512MB isn't enough to install F15. I'm hoping to get the release notes updated to reflect this. Minimum is around 600MB, it kinda depends on a few other factors. Having said that, this isn't a common failure case, so you may be hitting something else. What happens if you open a console and run 'liveinst' - do you get any errors there?

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
just as AdamW stated. F15 won't install with just 512MB RAM.. However, once installed, it will run in less.
The install image just takes more memory, which is understandable once you realize what has to go into it to support different hardware, etc...

I'll give that a try in a day or so...and let you know what happens. If it doesn't work, I'll try the install dvd since there is no install cd! I do plan on adding more memory when I have the time.
Thnx.

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
How come the live CD of the F15 LXDE (not the Gnome Live CD) needs more memory than the previous live CD F14 LXDE?
LXDE is a lightweight DE. I use it because my notebook ram limit is 512MB. This not expendable.
How low spec machine users will have to install the F15 LXDE Spin (with the command 'liveinst')?

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
nomnex: it's nothing to do with the desktop, it's the requirement of the installer (anaconda) which has got higher in F15. They have some plans to reduce it again for F16, but it's somewhat complex, too much so to get into F15.
liveinst isn't a workaround or fix, it's actually just the same as running it from the desktop icon; I just wanted him to run it from a console so we can see if any errors are thrown to the console when it fails.

I booted in console mode, and typed liveinst, and the cd disc light blinked for about 30 seconds or so and then it just hung at a blinking cursor. I didn't see any error messages. I let it sit for about 20 minutes before rebooting.
Thnx again, I guess I'll have to wait till I upgrade the memory on this machine.

Okay, thank you for the clarification. So, how will I do to install F15 LXDE on my notebook (knowing that the ram max is 512MB) once the stable release is out?

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
There's a lesser-known Fedora installation medium called netinst. Basically, it'll boot into the text mode installer (which only needs 256MB of RAM) and from there, you can download and install what you need.
I would do what I would usually do on a Debian or Arch system: Install the smallest system possible and then just install the @lxde-desktop group.

Good idea. What is the F-15 LXDE netinst link? I have never tried that, but I guess, all I need is to download the image, burn it on a cd and launch it, then I must download the spin over the the network.
If you know a easy to follow tutorial post back, I am now looking for some more information on Google. Thanks.
EDIT: I guess I found the link for F-14 http://ftp.riken.jp/Linux/fedora//re...dora/i386/iso/ but it looks like there is not LXDE spin for download this way. I am not too sure of the packages I need? So the Spin make it easy.

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
You can also do a text-based install from the DVD, and add the groups "X Window System" and "LXDE". Otherwise, there's always Lubuntu

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
I'm not sure it's accurate to say the text installer only uses 256MB of RAM; I haven't tested, but I wouldn't guarantee it. It should be somewhat lower than graphical install, though.
The other obvious workaround is to install F14 and upgrade to F15.

Re: F15 LXDE Livecd Will Not Install
Well, my problem of not installing from the LXDE livecd may have been using a cd-rw disc. I finally burned the iso using a regular cd-r and was able to install it using the gui installer with no issues.
So for now all is well for me.
I tried using the netinst with F13 once and it was a terrible experience. I gave up trying it, I had too many dependency issues. It was not as smooth as doing a Debian netinst for me. I hope it's better now days.
Thnx.
