Re: [TIP] kernel 2.6.39-rc4 on F15

Seems like a lot a work and you end up with a unpatched kernel

Code:
[root@main_pc leigh]# uname -r
2.6.39-0.rc4.git2.0.el6.x86_64
[root@main_pc leigh]#
I used fedpkg to checkout/build the latest from kernel/master

Is there a thread link on how to do this?

Thanks

Try

Code:
su
yum groupinstall "Development tools"
yum install fedpkg rpmdevtools
exit
cd ~
rpmdev-setuptree
mkdir ~/fedpkg_checkout;cd fedpkg_checkout
fedpkg co -a -B kernel
cd kernel/master
make release
fedpkg srpm
su -c "yum-builddep -y kernel-*.src.rpm"
time rpmbuild --rebuild --with baseonly --without debuginfo --target=`uname -m` kernel-*.src.rpm

I ran this, and after an initial kernel panic due to overclocked cpu, I restarted it and it all ran through

I have a file in
Code:
~/fedpkg_checkout/kernel/master/kernel-2.6.39-0.rc4.git2.0.fc16.src.rpm
that appears to be what was built...

Do I just install this now?

Sorry for being so naive, I just want to get this first time right...

And I appreciate your help!

Rebuilding a kernel uses all available cpu's to 100% causing lots of heat.

Code:
~/fedpkg_checkout/kernel/master/kernel-2.6.39-0.rc4.git2.0.fc16.src.rpm
That is just the srpm (source code), try looking in ~/rpmbuild/RPMS/`uname -m`/ instead.

Yes... there they are...

Thanks~!

One more question...

When I ran
Code:
su -c "rpm -ivh /home/vastonef15/rpmbuild/RPMS/x86_64/kernel-2.6.39-0.rc4.git2.0.fc15.x86_64.rpm"
I got

Code:
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
   1:kernel ########################################### [100%]
W: Possible missing firmware "cbfw_fc.bin" for kernel module "bfa.ko"
W: Possible missing firmware "ctfw_cna.bin" for kernel module "bfa.ko"
W: Possible missing firmware "ctfw_fc.bin" for kernel module "bfa.ko"
W: Possible missing firmware "aic94xx-seq.fw" for kernel module "aic94xx.ko"
/usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller: line 35: log_daemon_msg: command not found
/usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller: line 37: log_end_msg: command not found
The files are now in the /boot directory and I am about to boot, are these normal messages to see?

Thanks

Same here...

Thank you leigh! I learned an incredible amount today...

I appreciate it!

---------- Post added at 07:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:02 PM ----------

I have the file

kernel-devel-2.6.39-0.rc4.git2.0.fc15.x86_64.rpm

also in the /rpmbuild/RPMS/x86_64 directory...

I believe this is what I need to run in order to be able to use virtualbox. with this kernel...

The question I have is do I install it the same way I did the kernel?

Code:
su -c "rpm -ivh --force $HOME/rpmbuild/RPMS/<arch>/kernel-<version>.<arch>.rpm"

You can use yum to install packages that you have built and have locally.

Code:
su -c 'yum localinstall --nogpgcheck $HOME/rpmbuild/RPMS/`uname -m`/SOMEPACKAGE.rpm'

# yum install --nogpgcheck http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/pa...c16.x86_64.rpm

I think it's much easier.

That's easy but you wont get the nvidia driver or similar to compile due to the extra debugging.
My method disables the extra debugging (which makes it quicker as well).

You mean you cannot compile nouveau-gallium on this kernel with "my" method?

I mean the proper nvidia driver, the nouveau-gallium is useless with my card.
