Fedora 14 Failed to boot in Dell Inspirion 8500 after preupgrade from Fedora 13

System DELL Inspirion 8500

Everything was working hunky-dorry, on Fedora-13,boom,today a "ballon window popped up" saying that "would you like to preupgrade to Fedora 14" , I said go ahead make my day, system went thru all the check downloaded upgraded my repos, all the rpms, upgraded the dependencies and downloaded all the apps/sw....sytem Rebooted...Boom... "Black screen of Death" with a little cursor blinking..blink...blink ,does not display the login screen...

Please help, I am not a savvy linux user, and would need guidance on how to use grub to edit the command line mode.

Note: When I reboot and press <ESC> key the boot menu still shows Fedora-13 boot option,so I tried selecting that ,still the black screen with a little cursor blinks.

Any help appreciated , seem it could be the xorg.conf file problem,if yes can you help me what to do? or if this is a different kind of problem appreciate your guidance

Re: Fedora 14 Failed to boot in Dell Inspirion 8500 after preupgrade from Fedora 13

Usually with preupgrade you'll have a new, special entry in the grub menu called "upgrade" or something similar.
This entry should show up in the grub menu the first reboot after you ran the preupgrade.
I don't think they flag it as the default, they want to make sure you have to select it on purpose so the actual upgrade doesn't happen unintended. Apparently you did boot to the upgrade kernel because something odd happened-> blank screen. If you had selected the Fedora 13 kernel it should have booted as usual.

Did you make sure to fully update Fedora 13 before you did the preupgrade?

Marko,

Thanks, apologize for double post (newbie), I did not see the "Upgrade" on the grub menu, the only items were my previous Fedora1-3 versions.Yes I updated prior to preupgrade with sudo yum update.

I am lost.

If there was no special bootable upgrade kernel, then the preupgrade process didn't fully complete,

You might want to look over:

Re: Fedora 14 Failed to boot in Dell Inspirion 8500 after preupgrade from Fedora 13

I have a like problem - {popup} Would you like to upgrade to F-14? I answered Yes. It started downloading (and dling & dling...) - and after a while said "Need to reboot" - I said OK and it came up offering F14 and the 4 versions of F13 in grub - I selected F14 and hit return. The box restarted and went to a cursor on a blank screen.

__

and there it sits and I can't get back to F13. I have a F14-live DVD so I thought I'd load from it but it wants to wipe my drive. Now what?

Thanks (I hope)

UPDATE: got it - sda is my orig drive with sdb now being my system drive. I'll take a guess here - think the grub update went to sda. I booted up with the Live-CD[vd], mounted /dev/sdb1 /mnt/boot and did the grub-install stuff there (don't remember exactly what I did - number of things I tried and the hour of the day). Anyway I'm back in 1 piece ... abet a bit tattered...
