Unhappy 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

I am currently using Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with Core 2 Duo Processor and 3 gb ram...I want to install fedora 14 64 bit on my laptop for some reason. My cdrom drive does not work. So i burned the dvd iso image on a 4gb pendrive. I tried different types of softwares for burning like live-usb-creator, ultraiso. When the computer starts booting i change the option to boot from usb storage... after that the computer just stops processing and no further action is taken... i am sure the computer does not hang as ctr+alt+del works.

I've been trying for many days now using different softwares to burn... i tried the live-cd-image also but it does not work either. I tested my computer if it is capable of booting from usb by executing the memtest given on site pendrivelinux.com and it passsed all the tests. I've also tried updating my BIOS from a13 to a17 but still to no avail... I am in a lot of problems because of it. Please any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

try just copying the install image to your usb pen drive using dd

open a terminal or switch to a console screen

Code:
dd if=Fedora-14-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdX

(make sure to replace the /dev/sdX above with the device name of your pendrive
Warning: make sure you use the device name for your pendrive above. If you use the device name for a hard drive, you will delete whatever is on the drive. No warnings...

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

I was just working on the same laptop you have and it boots Linux off the stick no problem. I didn't boot F14 X64 live

Use this image
http://download.fedoraproject.org/pu...ve-Desktop.iso

And use
https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/

I'm not sure if you can download the this image from inside the application.
Set the persistent memory to something low like 200M, I recall there was an issue with this.

You can use a smaller stick because the live image is a CD not a DVD.

If you want to boot a DVD image you can't use the live tools out there, the live version will install the OS just fine.

If you want to see if it's a fedora issue then use:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/yumi-mu...t-usb-creator/

Download puppy or DSL and see if they boot.
You can also put the fedora image on as well and have all three to switch between.

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

Actually, I had issues with both liveusb and Unetbootin under linux in the past.
The Windows version of liveusb worked the last time I used it.
I'd go the multiboot route that way you have options for testing.

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

well i tried the dd command as well as unetbootin... none worked... when i choose the option of booting from usb storage and press enter... the screen just flashes the line "multiple active partitions" and then automatically starts booting from the hard disk... i tried unetbootin for both windows n linux... i am kind of a newbie so i can't understand this error... can anyone help me out???

@nyjetshead:
did u try linux 32 bit or 64 bit?... because i need to be sure that my laptop can run on 64 bit OS... and what exact OS did u install via usb?

also i actually want the dvd version but even if the live OS runs and installs from it, i'll be more than happy!

Also i've tried live-usb-creator in windows... didn't help me... What is the multiboot route?... Can you explain???

I run live from the USB various distros and tools using a multiboot USB.

You can run the f14_x64 live and then install from it.
You need to establish that your Ethernet is working correctly when running live... should not be an issue.... then install it onto the hard drive.
No need to go through the trouble of trying to get a bootable stick with a DVD image.

Multi boot will allow you to boot more than just F14 so you can verify that you can boot a linux ISO image.

Bootable DVD ISO from USB:
There is a windows based tool that does a good job of this but I can't recall the name.
I have it installed on an old system, when I find it I'll get back to you.

Snowy,

Using the above method I just booted a Insprion 1545 with F14_x64 live using a 4G stick.
Good Luck

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

I have similar problem. UNetBootIn, Fedora-live-use, UltraISO, YUMI, non of them can make bootable usb with fedora 15 for me!

Just after booting usb screen go blank. When using ultraiso it is also displaying string with version of syslinux.
Problem is also showing up with Ubuntu live-usb. While burning and working from Live-CD work fine.

Netbook Asus n71.

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

I have installed F15 several times from a USB stick using the full install DVD and not the livecd image. (on my systems, I had to use the full install DVD due to the livecd image not working with my hardware.)

I used dd to copy the dvd image over as I mentioned above.

Re: 64 bit fedora 14 installation with usb stick

Well, I do not know how it is with fedora, but Ubuntu works fine with my hdw, sometimes live-cd loads really long, but restart is good solution.

Only problems I can have is graphic card (hd5730) that have less then desired support in open drivers, but it should work (slowly).

But i'll try to use your fix.

"multiple active partitions"

It may mean that you have many partitions on you usb stick. Do you?
Or that your BIOS is not up to date to support booting from USB (my old computer needed upgrade to show completely new option).

And you can try to use UltraISO with its ability to erase MBR and other things on your USB stick.

dd command work fine, but after reboot BIOS claims that usb is not correct :/

I've gave up and installed dvd iso from DVD.
