Fedora 14 wont boot after kernel update.
Hello, i recently update the kernel in fedora through the GUI update manager and after restarting the new kernel wouldn't boot and i had to reboot into the old one. it freezes right after Plymouth finishes and the login screen should show up it just completely freezes, i do have proprietary nvidia drivers could it be that?

yes that could it be
If you add 3 to the kernel boot line in the grub menu, it should still boot into the newer kernel to console mode. Then reinstalling the NVIDIA driver could maybe help. But I don't really know because I don't know much about NVIDIA drivers. But on ATI/AMD cards it necessary to reinstall the proprietary driver after kernel update (except if akmod-catalyst is used).
Did you use the driver from the nvidia site or did you follow any Fedora guide to install the NVIDIA drivers?

AIUI, it used to be true that the proprietary drivers had to be reinstalled in runlevel 3 every time there was a kernel update. If so, have you tried doing that for the new kernel. If not, I'm sure that somebody here who uses them (I prefer kmod-nvidia.) will correct me.

Re: Fedora 14 wont boot after kernel update.
I would say it depends on how you installed your nvidia drivers (like the previous poster). But most likely you are missing the kernel module for your kernel, for the nvidia driver. I vote for http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration and kmod-nvidia.

Re: Fedora 14 wont boot after kernel update.
Ive managed to fix it but not in the way i wanted too. after trying to uninstall the nvidia drivers and re-enable nouveau it caused all kernels of fedora to be unbootable. i fixed it by reinstalling fedora it was a relatively fresh install anyway so not a whole lot was lost.

Re: Fedora 14 wont boot after kernel update.
I'm sure you will be alright if you just go with the rpmfusion, I have nvidia too and I have never had that problem using rpmfusion.

Re: Fedora 14 wont boot after kernel update.
Hi my fedora 14 did an automatic update tonight and on reboot it hangs displaying the "f" before the login in menu. The "f" is how I now feel because when I do "fn+f2" as it is booting it displays the sequence of items it is loading and all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs.
I do not know how to access the machine in command line mode and I am not sure what to do even if I could. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am also not sure.
I would appreciate anyones help to solve this issue as I have been using Fedora successfully for a number of months and really need to get data back off the machine.
Many thanks in advance for you help

Fedora 14 wont boot after kernel update.
System DELL Inspirion 8500
Everything was working hunky-dorry, on Fedora-13,boom.
1.A ballon window popped up saying that "would you like to preupgrade"
2. I said go ahead, system went thru all the check downloaded upgraded my repos
3.All the rpms, upgraded the dependencies and downloaded all the apps/sw.
4.Rebooted
5.Boom "Black screen" with a little cursor blinking ,does not display the login screen.
Please help, I am not a savvy linux user, and would need guidance on how to use grub to edit the command line mode.
Note: When I reboot and press <ESC> key the boot menu still shows Fedora-13 boot option,so I tried selecting that ,still the black screen with a little cursor blinks.
Any help appreciated , seem it could be the xorg.conf file problem,if yes can you help me what to do? or if this is a different kind of problem appreciate your guidance.
