- Only autostart the sound applet in GNOME 3
explains why I have to run gnome-sound-applet after I log in. Is there a local directory where I can put an autostart file that will survive an update to control-center? Just editing /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-sound-applet.desktop isn't a good permanent fix. Any ideas why this was done?

Ok, the place to put it is ~.config/autostart. But what in the world is "Classic GNOME with Compiz" advertising itself as? Here's the list of registered possibilities from from
freedesktop.org
Code:

Remember, these are case-sensitive. "KDE" not "kde" should be used.
