Quries about gnome

Hello,

I have downloaded and installed Fedora 15 Desktop edition.

It comes with gnome 2.91.6

There is some queries I have about it.

1) Is there any screen saver? I can seem to find one.

2) When I go to Windows | Applications. There are icons. However, when I hover the mouse over them, it doesn't expand the name of the icon. I was thinking there could be some pop-up tool tip that gives the complete name. i.e. operating ...

3) I am using a HP Mini 210 netbook 10.1 with screen 1024x600. So most windows get cut off at the bottom. As the screen size is not big enough to display all of the window. However, when I right click the top border and select move, it doesn't let me move as the top menu panel doesn't let me move pass it.

Many thanks for any suggestions,

,
Press and hold down the Alt key, to grab anywhere inside a window, and you can move it around as you want.

Re: Quries about gnome

as for questions 1 and 2

1: no there isn't a screensaver as of yet. (at least I haven't been able to find it.) I have been thinking about trying the xscreensaver to see if it works on this version of gnome, though. (I haven't done it yet)

2: no, I have missed that functionality as well. In previous versions of gnome, if you hoevered your mouse over a menu entry for an application, a lot of them would pop up a description of what it did. And with gnome 3 completely renaming what the applications are listed as in the con display, that does tend to cause some confusion as to what application is what. (there are some that are listed with the very same name, but different apps)

I have been hunting around a little trying to find a fix for that, but so far have been out of luck. (But I haven't put a lot of time into this one since it's not anything major, just a pain in the buttt)

For 1, I'm not sure of the depth of your question. Short answer is that it appears the screen saver can't be selected from a list... only screen blanking is available. If more info needed, continue this paragraph: click on your name in the upper right corner, then select "lock screen" will invoke the screen saver. CTL-ALT-L will also immediately activate the screensaver (the key sequence can be viewed/set in schema org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys ). Rudimentary settings (on/off, delay) can be found in the "screens" option of "system settings". A gnome3 schema holds some of this info.... schema=org.gnome.desktop.screensaver. However, there doesn't appear to an option about which screensaver to use... it only blanks. Options can be viewed with: gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.screensaver

I don't have the problem listed as #2... the fonts are fairly small on my netbook and (almost) full application names are shown in the application list. For me the name truncates after about 24 characters ( " Automatic Bug Reporti... " ).

I've shied away from playing with gnome 3 as my favorites and other settings have been reset with some of the frequent updates. As with others, hoping it continues to close gaps. Meanwhile, I'm refamiliarizing myself with KDE.

Yes, they've gone. I think there may be technical reasons for that.

However, I believe that the plan for 3.2 is to get rid of gnome-screensaver, and merge its functionality straight into gnome-shell. In theory, someone could write a screensaver extension for gnome-shell then (using Clutter).
