Error with gedit

Team,

I am getting the following error when I try to run gedit:

(gedit:31471): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported

**
GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Aborted (core dumped)

gedit used to work, I'm not sure what happened.

Regards,

John...

Re: Error with gedit

Are you trying to run this as root?

You probably did this:

$ su
# gedit

Try this instead:

$ su -
# gedit

Thanks man, it works fine now. I'm considering writing to the gedit project and ask them not to make things too confusing for people like me that are partially retarded.

Thanks,

John...

That's not their doing, it's the way you did su. Without the dash it gives you root privileges, while retaining your own path. So Gedit isn't in root's path in that situation. Using the dash puts root into root's path. Safer than using su - on it's own is to use it for a specific command. Try
Code:
su - -c "gedit"

Hello kurtdriver. Interesting usage of su.

Is there a difference between your quote and su -c "gedit"?

Re: Error with gedit

No but there's a typo in that post. It should be a lower case c. The manual says nothing about the upper case C. It works, but if it's the same thing, I couldn't tell you.

Edit: Yeah, the two dashes are necessary, otherwise you get the wrong path.

Re: Error with gedit

I'm successful with the single dash:

su -c "gedit"

I found your style very interesting. It's the first time I've seen it written that way.

Re: Error with gedit

This is what I get.
Code:
[kurt@Heimdal ~]$ su -c "gedit"
Password:

(gedit:31819): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported

**
GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
[kurt@Heimdal ~]$
I'd never tried running gedit as root, so I just experimented. I use jed for root things.
