installing programs as user vs. su

Typically when I install a program as me, it wont run under su, and when I install something under su, I cant run it as me. Just looking for some insight to whats happening here.

Can you tell me, how you installing software as user?
Seem's to me it can be PATH variable problem (You can see you PATH variable by running "$PATH" from terminal).
PATH var shows where bash will search for the executable files (places like /bin/, /sbin etc)

Change to the root environment:

$ su -
#

You can also do this:

$ su -c "./myapplication"
