Kernel patching

I want to patch the 2.6.5 kernel to fix a usb problem for my DSL modem. Done lots of searches and read the README under /usr/src/linux...., but it's not completely clear to me yet. Most of the references I found seem out of date, as the step 'make dep' Linux reports as redundant. Built the bzImage OK, but there's no corresponding System.map. Used 'make oldconfig' to configue so not entirely sure whether I need to 'make modules' or not?

Also, running out of space on the / partition already (trying the above 'make modules' fails due to lack of space anyway). Set up a 5G partition as recommended for /, plus 2G for /home to install the workstation config. Tried using Add/Remove Applications to free space, but that usually generates errors. Maybe 'yum remove app' would be better? Anyone recommend the best way to increase the size of the / partition or maybe add another partition to move /var to for example? The space available on the disk is not adjacent to the / partition.
