Re: O2 HSDPA MODEM not working in Fedora13 - pls help :(

Hi

Here is what I did. I have tested this for F12/13/14 and works fine! This applies for modems that can be used as a storage device as well! Make sure that u have got enough credits in ur SIM to initiate a data session.

If you are using Gnome Desktop

Create a profile in ur network manager by right clicking the network icon in the tray. Click edit connections. Go to tab Mobile Broadband. Click Add.
Connection Name: Any name
(Check) Connect automatically
Number:*99#
APN: Internet
Type: Any (It doesnt connect if you choose any other option!)
Allowed Methods: CHAP
Method: Automatic(PPP)

apply.

Now connect ur USB modem

as root

Check your modems product id and device id with

Code:
lsusb
You may see something like below along with the brand name of the modem

Bus 006 Device 002: ID 1c9e:6061

Check the device file by

Code:
mount
You will see something like below

/dev/sr1 on /*******Modem brand name****

My device is detected as a storage device first so I have to eject it and connect it as a usbserial

Code:
#eject /dev/sr1
#modprobe -r usb-storage usbserial
#modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1c9e product=0x6061
#exit
Give it some time. Then left click on the network icon in the tray and select ur profile "any name". You can see a green circling icon, trying to connect to ur mobile network. If this doesnt work, sorry dude, u might have to use a manual dialler!

If you are using KDE Desktop

Make sure that you have got the package "kde-plasma-networkmanagement" installed. You can see the icon of a RJ-45 port in the tray. Right click on that icon and choose "network management settings".
You will notice that the "Mobile Broadband" tab is greyed out. Dont worry, that means that kde network manager has not identified any mobile broadband modem connected to it! Follow the below steps

Code:
#eject /dev/sr1
#modprobe -r usb-storage usbserial
#modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1c9e product=0x6061
#exit
The RJ-45 port icon has now changed to a mobile phone icon with a red cross accros it. You will also notice that the "mobile broadband" tab is accessible now! Click add

Connection Name: Any name
(Check) Connect automatically
Number:*99#
APN: Internet
Type: Any (It doesnt connect if you choose any other option!)
Allowed Methods: PAP & CHAP
Method: Automatic(PPP)

apply.

It should automatically connect now if not, left click on the phone icon in the tray and left click "any name" under connections. Hurray!!

Fedora is really coooool

Regards,
Anish

I am having a similar issue. I tried the advice here, and I finally got Fedora to work with my USB modem. Thank you very much for this information, it has been very helpful to me. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with sonoma partners? What can you tell me about them?

Re: O2 HSDPA USB MODEM not working in Fedora15 - pls help :(

I am new to fedora and having problem with using internet using my lava usb modem. my computer identifies the modem because when i plug the modem and create a new connection the network manager shows the option 'usb modem' but after creating the connection profile i cannot access the internet but i can see the network available . I tried usb_modeswitch, dmesg, lsusb and everything. Even when i am trying to connect to internet through bluetooth, the network is available but it shows "SE Linux Denial"

THE BELOW ARE THE RESULTS THAT I GOT,SEE IF YOU CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM ,FRIEND
================================================== ==========

WHEN I CONNECT THROUGH BLUETOOTH:

SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/pppd from read access on the lnk_file /var/lock.

***** Plugin catchall_labels (83.8 confidence) suggests ********************

If you want to allow pppd to have read access on the lock lnk_file
Then you need to change the label on /var/lock
Do
# semanage fcontext -a -t FILE_TYPE '/var/lock'
where FILE_TYPE is one of the following: var_run_t, home_root_t, udev_var_run_t, var_lock_t, bin_t, cert_t, pppd_t, user_home_dir_t, device_t, devlog_t, locale_t, etc_t, proc_t, sysfs_t, abrt_t, postfix_etc_t, lib_t, root_t, device_t, ld_so_t, proc_t, pppd_etc_t, var_run_t, userdomain, textrel_shlib_t, rpm_script_tmp_t, proc_net_t, mta_exec_type, cert_t, var_run_t, var_run_t, var_run_t.
Then execute:
restorecon -v '/var/lock'

***** Plugin catchall (17.1 confidence) suggests ***************************

If you believe that pppd should be allowed read access on the lock lnk_file by default.
Then you should report this as a bug.
You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.
Do
allow this access for now by executing:
# grep pppd /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol
# semodule -i mypol.pp

Where do you see this? in the tray? Please take a screen shot of that and post here (drop down the network connection icon in tray and use the prtsc key on keyboard)
