Installing and using a DVD writer

Hi
Hi

I have an external dvd writer: Samsung SE-SO84c/TSWS USB 2.0 Writer and would like to install and use it on a fedora system.

Does anyone know how I go about doing this or know of any documentation where I can find out ?

I have an acer aspire nettop with Fedora Core 12 installed on it. General system info is listed below:
System Info:
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 28
model name : Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 230 @ 1.60GHz
cpu MHz : 1599.996
cache size : 512 KB

Currently I'm using Fedora 12, but will be upgrading to 13.

Re: Installing and using a DVD writer

Hello
just plug it in and open your fave file manager and it should be listed, when you try to burn a cd/dvd again the burn software should automagically find your external drive .

Re: Installing and using a DVD writer

as bonedome mentioned, it should be automatically detected and able to be be seen by the burn software and any other application.

However I have seen a few cases where the symlink for /dev/dvd didn't get created correctly. You should have a device (/dev/dvd) that is linked back to the actual device for the dvd drive (like /dvd/sr0). If it doesn't get created correctly, you can set up a udev rule to create it for you when it detects the drive being plugged in.

Re: Installing and using a DVD writer

Hi

Thank you for the replies - I did not realise it would be so easy !! I assumed I woud have to find and load drivers before it would be detected.

Do you know if the default burning software should work or do I need to download specific software for the writer ? If so is there an obvious place where I can find this ?

Thanks again.

Re: Installing and using a DVD writer

The default burning software should work fine.. However there have been numerous reports of problems with Brasero. I myself have had numerous problems with it, but many seem to be able to use it without a problem.

The ones that have problems with Brasero seem to have no problems with either GnomeBaker or k3b. So, if you try Brasero and it gives you errors, try GnomeBaker or k3b. Both are in the Fedora repo's and are easily installed with yum.

I mainly burn ISOs with cdrecord. I haven't burnt any coasters with this method.

Re: Installing and using a DVD writer

I have a page on the command line tools for it--you would want to add the rpmfusion repo and grab libdvdcss from livna--see the mjmwired guide, one of the guides listed in the Fedora setup guides section (the yellow link at the top of the page.)

My own dvd burning page is at http://home.roadrunner.com/~computertaijutsu/dvds.html
