CD Player not functioning

CD Player reads a CD OK and plays it - but there's no sound. Other applications (Music Player, Real Player) have no sound problems. Any suggestions please on what to check?

You need an analog cable from the cd player in your pc to the motherboard. most pcs don't come with them anymore. you can buy one for probably $5US.

Try using xmms(Audio player) for music CDs.
Make sure you do this: Options -> Preferences -> CD Audio Player -> Configure -> Play Mode: Digital Audio extraction.

Many thanks for the quick response - XMMS is working OK (even if I can hardly see the controls!) One further quick question - XMMS doesn't show the track titles even though the correct options have been set in the preferences. Is this a CD format thing?

Make sure CDDB is enabled to get track names from CDs. In XMMS: Preferences, Audio I/O Plugins. Select CD audio and configure. CD info tab. It should be setup to use freedb.freedb.org.
