FC1 audio help

Hey,
New time user with linux and this board. And I already need help

I'm using a GA-7N400 Pro2 board and am having trouble getting my audio to work. FC1 recognizes my sound device and I can here all the system sounds fine but when I try to play an audio CD I get nothin. I've tried all the audio apps that come with the OS but no avail. Is there anything I can do?

Oh also I've also been trying to find raid drivers for my board that support the kernel. If anybody has the same board and have found some let me know.

Does it seem like the audio cd is playing and you just can't hear any sound ro is that they audio cd doesn't seem to play at all? What apps have you used to play the cds? More detail needed.

I know that the CD is playing because the track time changes and I can change tracks, but there's just no audio. I'll have to get back to you on what apps I've used. I'm at work now and I got no internet at home.

I had the same problem, i think?!
Can it be that there isn't an audiocabel
from the back of your cd-rom/dvd-rom
player to the soundcard???

When I did this my problem was solved.
If this isn't the case let me know ok?

you actually don't need an audio cable from cdrom to mainboard; you can read the audio part digitally.

for example, if you use xmms, go to preferences [ctrl-p] and choose plugin "cd audio player", make sure that "use plugin" is checked and choose "configure". there you must switch from play mode "analog" to "digital audio extraction", and there you go!

Open your volume control preferences or start alsamixer from the terminal and check if the CD slider and the PCM sliders are at least above 50%.

Definitely check your mixers, because they sometimes default to sound off or all the way down (like kmix, etc)

I believe digital audio has to go thru a cabel as well, cause every cd-rom/dvd-rom player I have, has an outjack for it on the back. Audio streams that go thru ide or something else to the mainbord isn't a real digital audio stream.

About where to put the cabels. Unless you have an onboard soundcard the wires must be connected to the soundcard.

In Fedora Core 1 check:
preferences sound

There is an option: enable sound server startup.

I coundn't get any sound out of my speakers when I unchecked the option above and shutdown the speaker icon on the right bottom of the screen. So check it!

Correct me when I am wrong.

okay, when you link you're cdrom to your soundcard via cable, it's an analogous connection; if the pc extract the audio data via ide-port then it MUST be digital, since each ide connection (like hard disks and cdroms) is digital. you can check this by looking at cdplayer plugin in xmms (choose analog if you want to use your cable, for ide-transport choose digital audio extraction!).
drawback of playing sound via ide-extraction is that the cdrom-drive makes more noise (but that may depend on the specific hardware ...)

I tried to use the digital extraction with xmms yesterday but when I tried to access the files from my cd-rom drive the program crashed. I'm going to go an try update it or just use the analog cable.
