No sound in Fedora 14

Hi I am new to Fedora, after switching over from UBUNTU and I am having a problem with sound ( long story short it will not play sound ).

I used to have similar issues with alsa and pulse-audio when using Ubuntu.

LSPCI-K returns the following information.

I have re-installed pulse audio, I have checked and nothing is muted in the alsa-mixer, although it does return, headphones and not Master in the first category.

I am stumped as how to fix this.

Any help would be very earnestly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

Check the Pusleaudio Volume Control that the correct output device is selected and nothing is muted.
yum install pavucontrol if you don't have it.

I also can't access sound in fedora 14 even after installing Pulseaudio while nothing is at mute.

Hi, thanks for the help.

Fixed the volume control, so now I can view the settings, everything seems to be fine, correct output device seems to be selected, still no sound at all.

Installed another sound card to check if I would be able to use an alternative, installed M-Audio audiophile sound card, no luck with that either.

Seems I am doomed to have no sound on this system.

I remember on Ubuntu I think I used an alternative sound system, but I can not find anything like that in Fedora help guides.

I will keep fiddling around to try and resolve, but I am not optimistic at all at this point.

---------- Post added at 10:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:48 PM ----------

Ummm...hmmm.

Tried a number of solutions now ranging from fixes for Fedora 11, to old Ubuntu fixes, it seems like pulseaudio is very picky about when it works and when it doesn't work.

Two sound cards now seem to be incompatible with know logical reason, the installs all look fine.

There has to be a solution, I can't switch back to windows and sound is sort of integral to what I use my system for.

Anybody else have any ideas I will try anything.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

Do a search on here for your sound card. Some require some additional setup but I'm not familiar with that as fortunately I haven't experienced it.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

Thanks again for the help Oz.

Searched the forums for my sound card and no dice, I now have two sound cards in my system, both of which do not respond or give any sound output.

Anybody know of a PCI soundcard that is actually compatible with Fedora 14 ?.

I find Linux preferable to Windows in almost every way but it seems, in all distros I have used over the years sound is a constant issue, with every new update giving me endless headaches, playing around in the terminal, installing, uninstalling, editing....surely with everything else working fine sound should not be this complex an element.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

If you have 2 cards you can do lspci to see if they are detected correctly. Also check again in both Alsamixer and pavucontrol to see they are both using the same card for output.

My experience is most cards work in Linux generally. I have used both internal and usb without problems as long I was careful to select the cards. I'm currently using the internal card for output but capturing on a usb card.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

I posted an Alsa report, which hopefully will help with future development.

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=bb...d4fb76d16d6c25

Both sound cards are listed in LSPCI

Sound card one
Quote:
09:00.0 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies Inc. ICE1712 [Envy24] PCI Multi-Channel I/O Controller (rev 02)
09:02.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6306/7/8 [Fire II(M)] IEE
Sound card two

Quote:
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc HD48x0 audio
03:00.0 PCI bridge: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG PCI to PCIe Bridge
04:00.0 Audio device: Creative Labs [SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio] CA0110-IBG
Think I will look into alternative sound cards, known to work with linux, see what I can pick up cheaply.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend Oz.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

Since I am a simply person, I usually look for the simple solutions to my problem. Please don't be offended by the simplicity of this. I ask:

1. Did I do all my updates at the very beginning my Fedora installation?
2. Do I have more than one driver attempting to run my "problem" hardware?
3. Did I use approved Fedora rpms for my system? (i.e. Fedora or RPM Fusion)

Those 3 questions usually help me out a great deal.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

Ok no idea what I specifically did, but my sound issues are now SOLVED !!

Thanks for all the help guys.

I think the resolution may have been to do a complete re-install following this guide http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=225660

My sound now seems to work, I am pretty sure it was in the "update" stage of the guide that fixed it.

Anyway, the issue is resolved ( just wish I knew how so I could share with others having this problem ).

Take it easy all, thanks again !!

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

I believe my soundcard is the same as yours, if you follow the guide in the post above it "should" help.

But to be honest I kind of fluked my resolution.

Basically keep trying every approach until something works, that is how mine got resolved.

Sorry I can't be of more specific help.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

Well, looks like I may be able to help you guys after all.

I did some system updates and as a result.

Drumroll.....

I have lost my sound again.

So this time I am once again working through every single solution online, when I find the right one, I will document it and share with you guys.

FRUSTRATION, does not begin to describe working with sound in Fedora 14.

When I go into sound preferences there are now no cards list at all...hmmm, the cards are detected but it seems as though good old Pulseaudio is not communicating with my sound cards...once again.

I have tried removing pulseaudio then running sound No Success
Then tried a full sound re-install from the beginning, No Success
Then tried switching to OSS sound, No Success.

So that is what does not work.

I am going to see if I can find a way to revert back to my systems previous status, before the updates.

Hmmmm.

Ok, so when I now open Alsamixer I see the chipset is Pulseaudio.

When I play a youtube video, or mp3, I can see in the pulse volume meter, that something is moving, so the software is playing something, it just seems as though my soundcard is not talking to pulseaudio for whatever reason.

I do not have any soundcards detected under hardware in audio settings....veeeery interesting.

Any body have any further ideas I could try ?
