can't install F14 | system-config-lvm failure?

Greetings --

Been running Fedora for a while now, iterating up through versions to 12. Decided to to a clean install upgrade to 14. Apparently, bug mistake. Everything seems to be progressing fine, but after 'transferring install image to harddrive', the 'Starting Install Process' fails with

system-config-lvm-1.1.15-1.fc14.narach.rpm cannot be opened.

I have no idea what to do with this. I've reburned the install disk a couple of times (and checked the HASH) -- no apparent problems with the install media.

Tech details: x86_64 install on a multi-pro box with a 3ware raid 5 controller (5 disk). I've never run LVMs. Two simple hard partitions (/ and /home). Fedora 12 installed with no problems (as did every other version of Fedora <=12).

Help! ;-)

Some additional information:

1\ tried Fedora 13 -- wouldn't even recognize my disks. Installer hung at trying to find basic storage. Not a good sign

2\ tried my old Fedora 12 install DVD -- again, worked like a charm. Expect that F12 repos are now closed.

So, it seems as if some 'change' between F12 and F13/14 has made some part of the install process choke on my 'hardware' (I'm guessing something related to 3ware RAID card).

Still hoping for suggestions...

I just tried CentOS 5.5 (x86_64). Also installed fine. For some reason, Fedora >= 13 absolutely won't let me get past the problem noted in the OP.

I suppose I could go with CentOS (for long EOL support), but I need some of the newer compiler/dev libs in Fedora 14 for some projects I'm working on.

Most annoying...

I assume you also verified the checksum of the downloaded iso file before burning it to disk?
Is there a special reason why you need to install to lvm instead of real partitions, or am I missing something?

Hi, cooch17.
Couple of things here. How much ram do you have? Give us more specs what cpu, etc. And when you get to the part where it asks do you want to check the installation media did you click yes or skip? If your hardware is okay then it has to be a bad ISO. I'd try one from another mirror. If you can, mount the disc on another machine and use a file manager to open the system-config-lvm rpm file. I'd wager you can't. It will error out with something like "cio error: problem opening file" or some such. Actually, you should be able to choose "custom" in the part where you are asked what partitions you want to use. If it's automatically choosing Logical Volume Management something is wrong. I had a similar problem with an installation CD I got from the Fedora site -- not a mirror -- and it was a bad ISO.

Installed RAM: 64 GB

CPU: 4 x 2 core Opteron 885

media check: tested on each attempt, and passed on all occasions.

For the moment, I have CentOS installed and running fine. I partially buy the 'media/iso' argument, *except* that that alone might not be consistent with why Fedora 12 installs fine, but 13-14 do not. Mystery continues...

Did you try actually mounting the disc and see if the questionable rpm file can be opened? The media check during install is not foolproof -- in fact it says something to that effect. We have to ensure the integrity of the media before we can say it has no bearing on why it won't install but Fedora 12 and 13 will.

Understood. What I did was download/re-burn 2 different sets each of the .iso for 12, 13 and 14. (So, 6 total different DVD's). For the .iso files, I used 2 different sources in each case.

12 installs fine, but 13 and 14 don't. 13 wouldn't even detect the hard drive array, and 14 gave the error noted in the original post.

I haven't tried mounting to see if the rpm can be opened, but will at some point later today.
