Unhappy No sound in Fedora 14

Hi I am having sound problems with Fedora 14 the problem being no sound! I have been trying to fix this for a few days now and have spent hours and hours, I am considering putting windows back on because I am so frustrated but I would really like to get Fedora working if possible. I am new to Linux based systems but am really impressed so far, I installed it on 2 of my laptops, one of them works great, have sound no problems, but the other one has no sound, it's the older one that wont play sound, I don't know if that is relevant.

I have tried so many different fixes that I have found on the forums that I can't remember everything I've done. Now the first thing you would probably say is alsamixer -c0, I have checked that, it shows 2 master volumes one was up and one was muted. I turned the muted one up but it didn't fix the problem. But it may be worth mentioning that when I have returned to alsamixer it was back down. I tried the alsactl store command but after a reboot it had still gone back to mute.

Oh and just to clarify I am using su commands. I have logged in as root and tried to play sound because I suspected a permissions problem but I can't play logged in as root either.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled and uninstalled again pulseaudio. I have read it has caused issues for lots of people so I left it uninstalled. Couldn't open the sound settings in system preferences so I installed gmixer. So I have asla and gmixer currently installed.

I can't remember what else I have done, that's just what I have done in the last couple of hours, I have installed almost every sound related package that I have come across, I have messed up the operating system 3 times and done a fresh install.

I am really at my wits end with this. Can someone help me please?

Many Thanks

The default sound card is ATI-IXP. The laptop in question is an IBM thinkpad R15e

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

In a terminal type

lspci -k

and post the output here. This will allow me to see the exact audio device and if the kernel is loading a module (driver) for it.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

I had something similar, only static, and had to switch back to kernel 2.6.35.6-48 in order to get the sound back. I don't know what causes this but so far it hasn't been fixed that I can tell.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

open a terminal,

alsamixer

press F6

Use the cursor keys to highlight 'HDA Intel' and press enter.

Check the Master and PCM, should be unmuted and max volume.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

I also have this problem. My sound system was ok, but after unsuccessful install sound driver, i can't can see any sound devices in the sound preference. I think i lost my sound driver. I've just installed "realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06x" on the packet download from asus webpage (E3363_P5GC-MX_1333.zip, it's for my mother board P5GCMX-1333).

How do i reinstall the sound driver?

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

I lost sound after installing FC14 on my laptop as well. hda-intel can load but cannot "create a card". Solved it by installing a plain vanilla 2.6.36.2 kernel.

Re: No sound in Fedora 14

I am not sure if this is a hijack and sorry if so. I have no sound outside kde apps. Greeting and logout sound works. Dragon player also gives sound ok. However xine, vlc, mplayer and flash plugin give no sound.

My kernel is: 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64
pci cards are: (lspci -vnn | grep -i audio)
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio [8086:3b56] (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device [0403]: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan HDMI Audio [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] [1002:aa68]

Re: No sound in Fedora 14- Successful!

Thank you, I'm successful!
I did
Code:
yum reinstall alsa-utils alsa-plugins-pulseaudio alsa-tools-firmware alsa-firmware alsa-lib
but i was not successful. I search alsa, pulse, sound and tried to remove almost things i could. I removed alsa, vlc, pavucontrol, audacious,... ; i install alsa, vlc and i heard the sound.
In the last time, I didn't see sound driver in the sound control or i receive
" Waiting for sound system to respond"
when i opened it. After i could hear the sound, i didn't find where the sound control is because i removed it before. I installed gnome-media
Code:
yum install gnome-media
and it reappeared.

Maybe other one has problem with sound codecs. I think you can try with search to install them. By the way, i want to ask you that which applications you use to easily manage your applications? It's difficult to find out applications we want without icon (Ubuntu has this). You can try "Ailurus" and "Easylife" for easy installing codecs and basic applications (Ailurus show the system information, help to configure something, install some common applications (only list some popular applications), clean up by cleaning RPM cache,...)

My yum log:
