canon pixma mp280

Can anyone explain how to get the wife's xmas present to work in very simple terms! I have downloaded from the canon site cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz and tried to install but have obviously done something wrong as nothing happens - if anyone can give me step by step guide that would be great.

Read "readme file" :

Quote:
How to build rpm:
=================
* When you build one printer driver package.
--------------------------------------------
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --define="MODEL [Printer Model Name]" --define="MODEL_NUM [Printer Model ID]" --with build_common_package

* When you build plural printer driver packages.
------------------------------------------------
step 1)
$ rpmbuild -tc cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with prepare_fastbuild
step 2)
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with fastbuild --define="MODEL [Printer Model Name]" --define="MODEL_NUM [Printer Model ID]" --with build_common_package
step 3) and after step 3)
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with fastbuild --define="MODEL [Printer Model Name]" --define="MODEL_NUM [Printer Model ID]"

You can set the following [Printer Model Name]/[Printer Model ID].
[Printer Model Name] [Printer Model ID]
------------------------------------------------------------------
mp250 356
mp280 370
mp495 369
mg5100 373
ip4800 375
mg5200 374
mg6100 376
mg8100 377

Example:
========
* Example for build MP250 package:
----------------------------------
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --define="MODEL mp250" --define="MODEL_NUM 356" --with build_common_package

* Example for build MP250/MP280/MP495 packages:
-----------------------------------------------
$ rpmbuild -tc cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with prepare_fastbuild
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with fastbuild --define="MODEL mp250" --define="MODEL_NUM 356" --with build_common_package
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with fastbuild --define="MODEL mp280" --define="MODEL_NUM 370"
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-X.XX-Y.tar.gz --with fastbuild --define="MODEL mp495" --define="MODEL_NUM 369"

Re: canon pixma mp280

I have an MP250 so I have installed those drivers numerous times. You really shouldn't have to do all that much.

In the tar.gz file you downloaded from the Canon site just extract everything to the Desktop. and then find the common file... right click it an the installer will install it and then install the actual driver with a right click too.

Re: canon pixma mp280

As pythagorean says above. Extract the files first, then right click on the common rpm file and install that using package installer, then right-click on the mp280 rpm file and install that one the same way. Next open CUPS and add the printer there, choosing the driver you just installed.

The link below shows 'how to' more or less.

Re: canon pixma mp280

Hi Sagitter
tried that but got this:
$ rpmbuild -tb cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz --define="MODEL mp280"--define="MODEL_NUM 370"--with build_common_package
error: File cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz: No such file or directory
/bin/cat: cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz: No such file or directory
error: File cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz: No such file or directory
/bin/cat: cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz: No such file or directory
error: Failed to read spec file from cnijfilter-source-3.40-1.tar.gz

Am I missing something?

Also Pythagorean
Tried your thing but cannot find where to look for the common file, and right click just gives me 'open' or 'open with' or extract but I'm already extracted , any further clues ?

Re: canon pixma mp280

When I extract a file, I have it extract it's contents to a subfolder. So I would download the tar.gz file into the /home/~/Downloads folder, right-click on the file and choose to extract to a subfolder in /home/~/Downloads. You should now see the folder in Downloads from Nautilus (or Dolphin). Right click on the rpm files within that folder and choose to install. If you don't see any rpm files, then you didn't get the correct download from Canon.

Here is a good link to the files. Be sure and choose the rpm version.

EDIT: You do not need rpmbuild at all!!!
