Continued USB printer support

It seems my USB printer support is dying off. I submitted a bug, but was told it can't be fixed because the driver doesn't ship with Fedora, even though the driver worked fine in Fedora 14. I got a workaround, but I'm interested if anyone knows a way to get the driver working again. Its for a Canon MP240 scanner/printer combo.

The workaround for me is changing "cnijusb:/dev/usblp0" to "file:///dev/usblp0" in /etc/cups/printers.conf, and then adding "FileDevice Yes" to /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. There's a security warning for leaving FileDevice set to Yes, and changing it back means I have to delete and recreate my printer in cups whenever I use it. I got the workaround from this bug thread http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=285166#c12

Re: Continued USB printer support

I think its more than just a Canon drivers aren't supported in Fedora problem. I get no usb listed in "lpinfo -l -v" --with or without Canon drivers, and no local printers listed in system-config-printer or http://localhost:631/, unless its the non-working "cnijusb:/dev/usblp0". Whenever I try "cnijusb:/dev/usblp0" I get "Unable to open USB port device file: Permission denied".

I hope posting here after the bug report was closed isn't a no-no.

Edit: With the latest Rawhide update, now "cnijusb:/dev/usblp0" isn't viewable with "lpinfo -l -v" and isn't listed as an option with system-config-printer.

Re: Continued USB printer support

Printing in Rawhide works again for me with 2.6.35.8-60 FC14 kernel. Possibly another dracut bug?

Update: Printing works fine now after a couple of Rawhide updates, adding myself to the "lp" group, and changing the permissions of "/dev/usb/lp0" from "root:root" to "root:lp".
