I'm running FC3T3 (I think they call it version FC2.92) with all the updates (340 or so) and kernel 2.6.9-1.640. I do not have a working sound system, ie when I log into an account I get a sound system not working message. I have not <yet> tried to fix it.
The issue I wanted to alert people to is the possibility of a large portion of the cpu cycles being consumed by various poorly configured sound system resources. For example, if I issue a top command, I find that even while I'm building a kernel, approximately 50% of the cpu time is bieng spent on artsd. Yesterday when I was installing updates via up2date, I also noticed very sluggish performance. I suspect that computers without a working sound system may be running ill configured sound system threads. On my computer, there is a huge list of kernel error messages when I look at dmesg.
I've tried killing the artsd thread, but something seems to spawn a new incarnation of it shortly after it is killed.
