cheap fast HDD
I installed fc2 on an old slow maxtor i had lying around, and now its the biggest source of frustration because it takes forever to do anything!
I have seen scsi drives on ebay for decent prices, but the controllers that are so expensive!
so my question is: can you use a u320 drive with a u160 controller? obviously i wont get the 320mb/sec bandwidth, but the bottleneck is going to be my pci interface anyway.
take it easy

Try checking performance with a smaller window manager. I know Icewm is popular (I have used it a couple times and is very quick, try that). Is it data transfer or processing?

Just out of curiosity, what Maxtor drive is it, and what are its general Specs? It may be more of a problem with other hardware being not as well supported under linux as it is a hard drive problem. Just a though.

my system is a
PIII 733
192 mb ram
64 mb video
windows xp is on a 20 gb quantum fireball and works fine.
The hard drive that i put linux on (9gb maxtor) used to be operated under xp and it was slow there too.
The reason i think that its the hard drive is because every time that i hear the thing grinding away, the system goes real slow.
