boot process

hi everybody. I have a strange problem during boot up in fedora 14 (and 13 too). in some desktop computers (hp) the boot process hangs for 1-2 minutes between start cups and start acpi.. I think the machine stops waiting the acpi/hal service to start
is it possible to disable tha acpi service? what is it for and what i miss if i disable it?

Re: boot process

Hi,

Old-school rule tells us: if a process hangs during boot, it likely is trying to resolve some DNS name but DNS is not available (e.g., network is down). Look at the process which hangs. Try to boot without it, see if this fixes the boot time. Then, try to start it manually, see if it starts faster when the boot is completed (e.g., network is up).

WWell,

Re: boot process

the problem is immediatly after the cups srvice.. the acpi/hal service hangs in many desktop machines.. I asked what the acpi service is meant to do and if it is safe to disable it..

Re: boot process

acpid does virtually nothing these days and can fairly safely be disabled if you want.
