Hi.

The user name root and your chosen root password doesn't work? Or what?

Regards

Re: F14 Alpha No root logon access

In the inittab file I changed default run level from 5 to 3
This is so I can run the nvidia installer for the video cards I have.

when I reboot, I get the login prompt
it won't let the root account to login.

I have to login as 'me' then su to root.

What changed between F11 and now and can it be fixed?

Did you ever modify your gdm and gdm-password files to enable root login? I believe F11 you only needed to change gdm.

I believe that the default lets you log on as root. I routinely log on to Virtual Consoles in Fedora 13 as root.

Re: F14 Alpha No root logon access

Both files have been modified to the extent the line that reads auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet
are commented.
but I think this modification is to allow root to login under the gnome desktop gui

I still can't login as root at runlevel 3, I have to login using my user account then I can su.

a real pita to have to login in twice if you ask me...

Re: F14 Alpha No root logon access

I just tested on a brand new beta install. (On the other hand, I don't have GDM at all, didn't even install X. )

Regardless, I was able to log in as root without problem. Seems like something might be a bit odd. I would think, as you do, that any modifications to gdm would not affect it when booting into runlevel three--I wonder if it's one of those oddities that just happened somehow.

So, you boot up--you get a login prompt. You type root You type root's password.

You get invalid account or invalid password or something similar.

Have you tried resetting root's password? (Probably a waste of time though.)

Re: F14 Alpha No root logon access

Don't know if it's related, but I once stumbled on a bug in one of the first Fedora Cores (or was it still Red Hat?) that lead to a similar problem.

Short story: if you are using an international keyboard which has some keys mapped differently (ie. y and z switched the other way around, etc.), don't assume that the keyboard is set properly even when it should be.

Got me wondering for quite a while and I still remember it after all these years

Re: F14 Alpha No root logon access

somehow the file /etc/securetty had the wrong file permissions 0377, Fedora bug people had me set it to 0600 and I was able to init 3 and logon using the root account.

Now if I can only get dvd and mp3 files to play in any of the several multi media apps I'll be a happy camper.

Re: F14 Alpha No root logon access

Have you played with any of the guides linked at the top of the page--as a rule, multimedia does pretty well in Fedora once you add rpmfusion. (Don't know if it's yet available for F14 though).
