Copy system to another hard drive

Wondering if any know of a program that I can use to make an exact image of my fedora 13 operating system and transfer it to my new hard drive. I want to upgrade the hard drive and reinstall the exact system from the original drive to my new one, without starting from scratch. Just wondering if there's a program for Fedora 13 like Norton Ghost.

Thanks for help

Charlie

Re: Copy system to another hard drive

You can also do what I did -

1. partition new disk, create filesystems
2. use tar/cpio to copy the root filesystem (remember the SELinux labels...)
3. use tar/cpio to copy the boot filesystem
4. adjust fstab entries (I went to UUID mounts)
5. boot CD in recovery mode, and install grub on the new disk

One thing I did do in 5 was remove the original disk...

What I ended up with was two root filesystems (old Fedora 11, new Fedora 13)
and a shared boot and swap filesystems which allowed me to boot either one
I did expand the /boot to 1GB just for future expansion...

Re: Copy system to another hard drive

I have a similar question, but a bit different as well. I have a 1.5TB HDD that was recently running my Fedora OS. I wanted to move/copy the install to a new 128GB SSD drive. Normally, it would be impossible to try and fit 1.5TB onto 128GB. However, the OS is only using 30GB of the space on the 1.5TB. I wanted to move the install over to the SSD, and then utilizing the 1.5TB for file serving purposes. Would anyone know the most effective way to get this accomplished? Most of the ways I heard so far require a destination drive equal or greater than the source drive. But considering there is only 30GB being utilized, I need another solution. Thanks in advance.

Re: Copy system to another hard drive

Dear kiddsupreme,

I would try:
/usr/sbin/dump 0f - <partition> | (cd /mnt/newdrive(/folder) && /usr/sbin/restore xf - )

The destination filesystems have to be prepared and mounted before.

No problems with pseudo file systems like /proc, but I'm not sure about Selinux contexts.

Afterwards, you have to install grub in order to be able to boot from the new drive.

Good luck.

Re: Copy system to another hard drive

The methods already here should work for you, as they all copy files across (in fact, "cp -a ..." would work fine). It's coping raw volumes (e.g. with dd) that needs at least the same amount of space.

EDIT: I'm not sure about CloneZilla though.

Re: Copy system to another hard drive

Even if you would copy the partition you could always resize it before to something that would fit on the new drive.
