Re: Another app is currently holding the yum lock . why ?

Either wait for PackageKit to finish, assuming it isn't broken, or do what I do and remove it first thing after a new install. You could just turn off all the auto-updating and notification stuff, and then use the gui when you wanted to. This is GNU/Linux, after all, not Windows.

You could kill pid 2038, but who knows what state that would leave PackageKit in - you might need to do some yum repair work the next time you tried to use it.

Re: Another app is currently holding the yum lock . why ?

sometimes the process holding the yum lock can end abruptly and forget to release the yum lock. (this is mostly caused by a bug)

your best best is, if you know of no process holding the yum lock ( i.e. PackageKit, Yum, or Rpm ) to terminate the process using the process id number given in the Yum Lock message.
Quote:
kill <insert PID #>
you may have to do this several times if it does not respond initially... but if you simply can't get it to work... a restart should clear this up.

Hello
to disable auto updates as mentioned above I think it's in system > preferences > updates set all to never, then yum update every few days or so

Hi~
2 days. Wow. You're a very patient man. HMSS013 is probably right, PackageKit never released the lock.

As bonedome says, in System/Preferences/Software Updates, set "Check for updates" to Never, and "Automatically install" to Nothing. And uncheck the box for "Check for updates when using mobile broadband", just in case NetworkManager is broken, too. (I don't use that either).

Yum from the command line, or Yumex if you like a gui that works, are better than PackageKit.

Re: Another app is currently holding the yum lock . why ?

if killing the process doesn't work, this will:

su -c 'rm /var/run/yum.pid'
