Stupid linksys wireless g router

Won't authenticate me when I try to log into it to take a look at my port configuration. My brother managed to fix this sort of thing when it happened on windows, but it was through the CLI and I have practically zero knowledge of how to use the windows CLI so could some one help me make my router behave. (running fc3test2 2.6.8 custom (soon to be 2.6.9custom.) ) I know the fix on windows involved ipconfig..any ideas?

No one has knowledge of the windows CLI

The router is not dependant on you OS. It has a web interface...Just make sure you have the right ip and subnet. You may need to set up linux to accept its ip via dhcp. Try pinging it and then put it's ip in the browser and login. If you have forgetten your password you can alwas reset it by pressing the reset button for about 6 seconds.

You need the password. If you lost it you can reset to the factory defaults by poking the reset hole and holding for a few seconds.

On Windows he probably did ipconfig release and ipconfig renew to get a new IP. That won't help to look at the router settings.

If I'm not mistaken you need a java compliant/enabled browser. I use firefox to login to both a linksys router and an airlink+ router (with fedora core 2). I know for sure that the airlink+ router needs java, I'm about 100 miles away from my linksys router so I can't confirm, but I believe that is all you'll need, even if you're getting the logon prompt, not all firmware on all routers will spit out an error code to give you a clue. So I'd start there (java support) .................

Maybe the router has already been reset. There is not a username, just a password (default: "admin").

I didn't forget the password....I really don't want to have to reset it though, I havent actually tried to get into it from Linux..I will try that next.

You should elaborate a bit on that. These routers are pretty easy to manage. Basically through the web interface. When do you get stuck? When trying to log in to the routers webserver/configuration? Is the NET ID section of your IP the correct one (typically 192.168.1.X)? If not have linux renew your ethernet card's IP by typing dhclient. The DHCP server is usually the linksys router itself.

Give us some more info to help you out....
