Help! FC2 slow!!

I recently upgraded to FC2 (kernel 2.6.5-1.358) from FC1 and suddenly response time for application startup has gone down the drain. xterm takes 6-10 seconds to start up and firefox takes almost 30 seconds!!

I have Suse and windows on the same box (P4 2.6Ghz, 256MB), and they seem to run fine, so its probably not a hardware problem. I have FC2 installed on my laptop too, which seems to work fine.

Sorry cant give a more accurate description of the problem. I checked kernel messages and hdparm and didnt find anything out of the way.

Anyone else notice similar problems? Any suggestions for fixing this? please help, the comp is becoming nearly unusable for me

Thanks,
slice

How much load are you putting on the machine? In particular, how many applications do you have open?

It may be your memory, you never can have too much. Or it could be your hard drive: is it clicking like mad?

The load isn't much. uptime shows < 1%. I use it as a desktop, so not many applications.. few browser windows and 15-20 terminal windows. Thats it.

I did notice the hard disk light blinking more than it normally should. I ran iostat and noticed a slightly elevated io (bi and bo of around 400). Any default setting I can change that can speed things up a bit (I am assuming hardware is OK, since Suse runs fine) ??
