f13 system won't recover after sleep

hi guys, probably this kind of questions have been asked number of times. which log file should i look at to debug problem with system sleep or anything to do with the system won't return back after goes to sleep.

Basically i got my system running from the night before. No problem until this evening around 5pm. (i realised the problem at 5pm) my monitor goes to sleep. My system power still on. It won't respond to monitor/mouse movement. i can't ssh in.

After reboot, check /var/log/messages. The only message there before reboot was at 9am. I am pretty sure everything worked fine around 2pm.

So
1. Which log i should look at?
2. Any suggestion what i should do to test what's wrong with it?

Cheers,

Which Kernel are you using?
I realized that the 2.6.33xxx kernel works fine.
But the 2.6.34xxx kernel gives me the same problems you've described.

Re: f13 system won't recover after sleep

I remember being confused about this at one point. I would put the lid down on the laptop before walking into the kitchen (so cats don't run across the keyboard). I come back, open the lid, the screen is blank. I move my fingers over the touchpad with no response. Finally, I give up and press the power button to reboot.

Eventually, I realized that the computer would awaken when I press the right-arrow key. Maybe any keystroke would work. I changed the power settings so it just stays awake when I close the lid now.

Maybe you tried the keyboard, but I thought I'd chime in just in case.

Donald

Strange in a desktop computer, overly familiar from my laptop. This is a one-off? I'm not sure what you mean by sleep, that's a power management term. Do you mean the screensaver was running?

What are your hardware details, in particular graphics card?

If you are talking about powermanagement suspend/hibernat/resume problems, the log files you want to look into are

/var/log/pm-powersave.log
/var/log/pm-suspend.log

depending on what powersave action has been triggered.

Thanks for that.

I still cannot figure out what caused my Fedora to crash. Things might be related to the issue
  • sometimes when i start the system, i got message showing CPU0 not responding.. CPU1 not responding.. then the system reboots by itself
  • my /home is using JFS, this may contribute to the problem
  • I just realised one of the hard drive in the RAID has bad sector
I will keep in mind of the problem since it only happens once. thanks all who had replied

Re: f13 system won't recover after sleep

Hi everyone,

I just read through the whole thing, but the problem is, that this happens to me all the time. Since about 2 or 3 days, my laptop won't wake up any more after letting it go to StandBy.

I just tried some minutes ago, same problem. Here the logfile of suspend.log: http://fpaste.org/E9EU/

I hope you can help me.

Thanks a lot!

Cheers,

Yuko

Re: f13 system won't recover after sleep

I've actually been having the same problem. For whatever reason, I was able to work around this by booting an older kernel. Unfortunately, tonight's kernel update cleaned out the kernel I've been booting from.

Hi, not really sure how to advise you what you need to look at regarding standby. Most of the time my system never recover correctly from standby. I hardly put my system to standby since I am using desktop (except when I accidentally press the sleep/standby button from my keyboard). So someone may be able to better advise you on the matter.

You should be able to boot the old kernel, after reboot press any key and select one of your old kernels. Then if you already found your correct old kernel which work change the default one to boot in /etc/grub.conf

Of course, I've actually done this. I was actually hoping to find some solution that would let me use the newest kernel and allow me to have the utility I want from my system.

Thanks anyways, though.

Re: f13 system won't recover after sleep

My Problem is, that I've just upgraded from FC12 to FC13 two days ago, so there's no older kernel available (or is that what you meant, finding a workaround for that?) ... but the Problem was already before upgrading, so that was not the problem. But strangely it has started about 3-4 days ago, before everything worked fine and I almost never had to start the computer new, unless an update told me to. I don't know if I've changed anything some days ago, and I wouldn't know what.

Thanks for the replies since, I hope anyone can help me!

Cheers,

Yuko
