CPU Making sound

Hi--

For the past 2 days my CPU Is making some abnormal sounds while its running. I googled it for a long time and got this website which says there could be some problem if the linux things arent properly installed.

Could anyone tell me as to what exactly the problem may be and what i can do to control it.

Re: CPU Making sound

Ummmm..... CPUs don't make sound.

The only source of vibration near a CPU is usually the fan.

When a fan makes "unusual" sound it is usually a bearing that is failing - and the
fan needs to be replaced.

Note - even though the fans are small, and don't take much power - a failing fan
CAN cause a fire.

My fan melted. The CPU was fine as it shutdown as soon as it overheated - iit was
a Pentium Pro, with all the heat associated...

Re: CPU Making sound

The power circuitry can make a singing sound if the cpu frequency is constantly switching up and down at a beat frequency in the audible range.

Re: CPU Making sound

If it does, then there is a good chance the chip can be damaged due to resonant
frequency reinforcement. The vibration could shake loose the joint between
the chip and the case - causing additional heat build up.

Re: CPU Making sound

Hi--

I have this laptop Acer Aspire 3683NWXCi. I opened it up today completely and found that there was lot of dust accumalated on the surface. Unfortunately i couldn exactly find as to where the fan was.

It only creates sound sometimes, when i working now its working completely fine. I think there is no problem except cleaning the dust. What do you say?

Re: CPU Making sound

Blow it out through the ventilation holes/grids with a can of compressed air on a regular basis, (once a week should do it) and things should work out fine. Also, never operate the laptop on a blanket or other such soft surface. And if you balance the laptop on your knees when you work, make sure the contact points do not cover the ventilation areas.
