Unable to set a static IP with Network Manager

I had been running Fedora 12 for some time without much difficulty until I had to change the motherboard of the computer. The new MB comes with Realtek 8112L PCIe Gigabit LAN controller.

I am not able to use this LAN controller without Network Manager. The problem is I am not able to set a static local IP with it.

Network Manager -> Edit Connections -> Auto eth2 -> edit -> IPV settings
As soon as I change Method to Manual, 'Apply' button gets grayed out.
I am not able to save any change.

What do I do now?

Re: Unable to set a static IP with Network Manager

Hi,

Not maybe the advice you expected, but: if you only have one network interface and you have a static IP address for it, just dump the NetworkManager for good - you won't miss it.

Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, set the boot method to "static", enter your IP address. Then disable NetworkManager and enable the system service called "network" (running "ntsysv" from console should help you with both tasks).

Re: Unable to set a static IP with Network Manager

Is disabling NetworkManager the same thing as removing (or dumping) it?

When I disable NM and set eth0 by System->Network->Add, the LAN card would not activate. This must be something new because I used to remove NM without any problem before.

Does the driver for Realtek 8112L card work only with NM?

Re: Unable to set a static IP with Network Manager

No, you would want to disable NetworkManager and enable network:

The command line way:

chkconfig NetworkManager off
chkconfig network on
(edit the ifcfg-eth0 file as in post #2)
(stop NM and start network):
service NetworkManager stop
service network start

Or if you want the easier way:

run system-config-network (uncheck the box that sets the eth0 as managed by NetworkManager and set all the other
settings that you want... static ip and save the changes) and then run:
system-config-services (stop and disable NM , start and enable network)

network drivers won't be specific to a particular manager, NetworkManager and network can both use your realtek 8112L driver

Re: Unable to set a static IP with Network Manager

NM was disabled and Network enabled.

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth3 was edited.
When a static IP was set, the eth3 card stopped working.
This is a mystery to me, but I don't want to waste more time on this.

So, I had no choice but to set it to DHCP.
As a work-around, I set the MAC address of the eth3 to a reserved dhcp address.

Thank you all for your prompt and timely help.

I've found the source of the problem.

I was not careful enough to type the correct subnet mask.

Re: Unable to set a static IP with Network Manager

that would be why NetworkManager wouldn't let you apply the configuration, I'm guessing.
