Nvidia GPU selection help

Hey guys, I've built out a new desktop, which has been performing very well in windows, but I'm looking to bring it to the next level with f13.

My issue is the graphics card. I seem to have a very good ati hd5670 based graphics card but I'm seeing that ati really has no real proprietary (or open source) drivers that provide a good level of performance.

With that said, I'm looking for a fairly comparable nvidia based card. Maybe something along the lines of a gtx 260.

Any recommendations on what would be a good fit for fedora.

Thanks
Mike

I also found the GeForce GTX 465 (Fermi) GPU based cards to be a pretty powerful cards. Any thoughts options as to this will be in f13 - particularly with regard to 3d/proprietary support

Re: Nvidia GPU selection help

The nvidia thread in guides and how-tos (link in my signature) has a list of supported gpus, it seems not all latest are supported yet. Maybe doing a search on here for your choice before buying might bring some feedback. Sorry can't be more help.

The GeForce 6200 may not be the latest and greatest, but I can assure you that it works Just Fine, if that's any help.

Re: Nvidia GPU selection help

Thanks for the posts, and I followed Leigh's thread to the point where I did find some compatible cards.

I'm leaning towards the GTX260 and did notice that it's compatible - anyone have any thoughts on that card or one of the fermi based cards, i.e., gtx470.

Re: Nvidia GPU selection help

Switch down to an AMD 3xxx or 4xxx. They're supported by the open source driver.

If you want to use your 5xxx, you should install the latest fglrx driver.

Going to nvidia won't solve any problems. It'll just create more.

Have a look at this before you settle on an nvidia card. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_PureVideo And this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU

That being said, I settled on this one, and don't have any complaints at all.

Why do you say that switching to nvidia won't solve any problems but create more, when nivida has a better history of producing/maintaining video drivers.

Plus I don't want to downgrade my graphics card to a 3xxx/4xxx as I'm liking the performance of the 5670 in windows. Based on my research so far, the GTX 260 is going to produce similar or better performance in windows, and has linux drivers to install in fedora.
