Settings Not Being Saved

I'm new to Fedora; been using it for just a few hours. I have Fedora 10 setup on a LiveUSB and it works great.

However, any setting that I make or files I save are gone when I reboot. For instance, I change the mouse cursor speed and made a "Test" word doc and saved it to the desktop. Yet when I reboot, the "Test" file is gone and does not even show as a recent document and the mouse speed setting was set back to default.

Am I missing something that need to be accomplished prier to the shutdown?

Re: Settings Not Being Saved

If you are using gnome.

Fishing expedition:
Does you ~/.xsession-errors have something like this:

Quote:
** (gnome-settings-daemon:7652): WARNING **: Unable to connect to dbus: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-vxgf8S5VVv: Connection refused
Or something with bonobo inside?

According to the website below this is how gnome works behind the curtains.
http://live.gnome.org/Accessibility/Mechanics

One way to try and see what is trying to set those permissions is to set the imutable attribute "chattr +i [file here]" and look at the error messages in the logs to see which application complains about it.

Probably something like "application foo failed to open [file here] <some message>"

Re: Settings Not Being Saved

To save anything on a live cd set up you need to create some sort of persistent storage. Have a look at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora...ta_Persistence

I did this, 1000mb. I'm currently redoing the LiveUSB and plan on changing it to 3500mb to see if that will work.

I went back and formatted the USB drive before starting over. and made the persistent storage about 2000mb.

I started it up and made some changes, restarted the computer and everything saves. All the changes I had made were still there.

Good result. I saw another thread where the storage had been used up with temp files, settings etc. so that may have been your problem too.

Re: Settings Not Being Saved

I notice also that with the Live USB creator, that there is a few different options for the version of Fedora (i686, x84_64, etc). What is the difference?

Re: Settings Not Being Saved

i686 is 32 bit and x86_64 is 64 bit. Most newer computers can run 64 bit but all run 32 bit. For most people there isn't much difference but if you run processor intensive apps you may notice better performance with 64 bit.

Another point I notice you have F10. That is past end of life, current version is F13 and it and F12 are the supported (ie. there will be future updates for them) versions.

I'm using it because if a few weeks I start another class for college. Fedora 10 is what came with the book. So until the class actually starts, I'm not sure if what we are going to learn is about Linux in general or specific to Fedora 10. If it's more general information I'll upgrade as soon as I can.
