Headphones don't mute the speakers!

Hey, found a curious issue with my new Dell XPS 8100...on my old Inspiron, as soon as I plugged in the headphones they muted the speakers. That's how it should be, because you listen to headphones so you don't blast your music all over the room. But now, on the 8100, the speakers still blast even if the headphones are plugged in.

Anyone know what's causing that or if there's a fix? Headphones ALSO work, so they're getting a clear signal. It's just simultaneously being played in the rear speakers too.

Re: Headphones don't mute the speakers!

The funny part of this "problem" is that people also complain when they are unable to make the speakers work with the headphones LoL

Anyways, that is a detection problem, the script(in the UDEV rules) responsible should automagically disable the speaker, but you can do it manually through pavucontrol or try selecting the right hardware profile in gnome-volume-control(i.e. gnome-volume-control -p hardware) of course if you are using gnome in KDE the volume control is unknown to me sorry.

Re: Headphones don't mute the speakers!

Try this:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
it will return something like ""Codec: Realtek AD1984"
then check http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentat...dio-Models.txt to get the right model.
Create a file "/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf" with the following line in it:
options snd-hda-intel model=the_model_of_your_card

Re: Headphones don't mute the speakers!

If magnusk's excellent suggestion of trying a model assignment does not work, then IMHO your choices are to either:
  • update to the latest 1.0.23 version of alsa (which may or may not address the problem), and
  • if that does not work, its likely an upstream alsa problem and a bug report should be raised, either on alsa or Fedora-13 (dependant on how the Fedora team prefer to handle such bug reports). Often raising a bug report on sound will result in an alsa developer making a fix and implementing the fix in a new alsa release, which can then be installed. But one needs to support the bug report resolution

Re: Headphones don't mute the speakers!

Well, the results of the /proc/... | grep... above returned two results:
Quote:
Codec: Realtek ALC887
Codec: Intel G45 DEVIBX
I'm going to try the options method and see if that works! :-)

Re: Headphones don't mute the speakers!

I'm seeing this same and new problem on my EeePC 700 with alsa 1.0.23.

Guess I'll patiently wait for an update.

Re: Headphones don't mute the speakers!

Hi guys,

first of all I think there's a big confusion about this headphones and speakers issue. Only in this forum, if you search for both keywords, you'll find tons of threads about the same topic.
I'm a complete newbie and I was disappointed both with F12 and F13 to see that it was impossible to make speakers and headphones work indipendetly (i.e.: not both loud and not both muted at the same time, which is obviously useless).
With both F12 and F13 I tried all the proposed workarounds (e.g. editing /etc/modprobe.d/sound) but nothing worked.
In both cases the only solution was removing pulseaudio. Now the switches in gmixer do their job correctly at least.

It's a pity that as I uninstalled pulseaudio the volume up/down and mute hotkeys stopped working. Which sounds very strange to me but ok as far as I can listen to music from my laptop without annoying my flatmates.

Regards,

w.

By the way, my laptop is a Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo X9525. The sound card is recognized as Realtek ALC262.

If anyone solved the problem in a cleaner way...
