    Compiling from source fails (DSO)

Running F13, coming from openSuse and trying out a new distro. I'm trying to compile something from source, and I'm having some difficulty. ./configure seems to go just fine, but when I run "make" I get the following error:
    Code:
/usr/bin/ld: src/snes9x_gtk-gtk_display_driver_xv.o: undefined reference to symbol 'XDestroyWindow'
/usr/bin/ld: note: 'XDestroyWindow' is defined in DSO /usr/lib64/libX11.so.6 so try adding it to the linker command line
/usr/lib64/libX11.so.6: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
I've tried with LIBS="-lX11" ./configure, but "make" still fails with the same error. I'm somewhat new with compiling from source, and I have no coding knowledge whatsoever. I've read the Wiki article "UnderstandingDSOLinkChange," but it's all Greek to me.

What do I need to do / understand at this point? Thanks to all.

Please, post more output of the command - at least 100 last lines.

    Also send output of command:
    ls -la /usr/lib64/*X11*

Re: Compiling from source fails (DSO)

This is what I'm trying to compile right now: http://snes9x-gtk.googlecode.com/fil...x86-64.tar.bz2.

It's a GUI frontend to this (which compiles and runs just fine): http://snes9x-gtk.googlecode.com/fil...52-src.tar.bz2

Thanks to you, as well, sir.

    Ok edit snes9x-1.52-src/gtk/Makefile.in line #269

    change it from

    Code:
    snes9x_gtk_LINK = $(CXXLD) $(snes9x_gtk_CXXFLAGS) $(CXXFLAGS)  \
    to

    Code:
    snes9x_gtk_LINK = $(CXXLD) $(snes9x_gtk_CXXFLAGS) $(CXXFLAGS) -lX11 -ldl -lXext \
    rerun ./configure then make

If I had 100 years, I wouldn't have come up with that, but it worked great.

    Thanks to both.

Re: Compiling from source fails (DSO)

Same problem here but when compiling Inkscape. I am sure you can come up with the appropriate edit, but you know the old saying, "give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach him to fish..."

How did you come up with the answers? What has changed about Fedora's environment that breaks so much with everyone's source?

Anyway, the source came from here:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/

and after installing the dependencies' devel packages as shown here:

    http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingFedora

The compile seemed to go well up until the last part. Running make a second time skips up to the point of error so I paste that here:

    Code:
    [daniel@alpha inkscape-0.48pre1]$ make
    make all-recursive
    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1'
    Making all in src
    make[2]: Entering directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1/src'

/usr/bin/ld: note: 'XGetWindowAttributes' is defined in DSO /usr/lib64/libX11.so.6 so try adding it to the linker command line
/usr/lib64/libX11.so.6: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make[2]: *** [inkscape] Error 1
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1/src'
    make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1'
    make: *** [all] Error 2
    [daniel@alpha inkscape-0.48pre1]$
I actually got a similar error once before on a different attempt to compile but I forgot what it was... I found some link that described some changes in Fedora DSO whatever stuff but it was so far over my head that I just got dizzy, took a few steps and collapsed onto the floor. The solution at the time was to give up. Perhaps if someone who famously explains things in ways that the rest of us can understand?

---did more stuff to get more output

On a hunch, I acquired the source RPM from here:
    http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat...r.fc14.src.rpm

I wanted to see if there were any changes or patches I could identify that could get me through this. I applied the patch in the RPM relevant to the libX11 library and that error went away followed by a new error... I applied some of the other patches I found in there. No harm seems to come from it but I now have this error:

    Code:
    [daniel@alpha inkscape-0.48pre1]$ make
    make all-recursive
    make[1]: Entering directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1'
    Making all in src
    make[2]: Entering directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1/src'
      CXX extension/internal/pdfinput/pdf-parser.o

      CXXLD inkscape
    /usr/bin/ld: libinkscape.a(javabind.o): undefined reference to symbol 'dlsym@@GLIBC_2.2.5'
/usr/bin/ld: note: 'dlsym@@GLIBC_2.2.5' is defined in DSO /lib64/libdl.so.2 so try adding it to the linker command line
/lib64/libdl.so.2: could not read symbols: Invalid operation
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make[2]: *** [inkscape] Error 1
    make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1/src'
    make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/daniel/Desktop/inkscape-0.48pre1'
    make: *** [all] Error 2
    [daniel@alpha inkscape-0.48pre1]$
Seems to be essentially the same error but on a different area. I have to wonder if whatever Redhat/Fedora is doing is worth the hassle and frustration it causes.

In configure.ac line 748 I added "-ldl" to the result of this:

    Code:
    INKSCAPE_LIBS="$INKSCAPE_LIBS -lpng -lz -lX11 -lxml2 -ldl"
The code now compiles successfully and I was able to run "sudo make install" without problem and the program now runs.

I found this bit of info again:

    http://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php...gDSOLinkChange

My head is still swimming a bit, but on a leap of faith combined with other patterns of solutions observed here and in the patch files mentioned above, I decided that since the error was associated with "libdl" that I should use a similar linking reference to the others. I did all this by guessing, deduction and such. I really don't feel as though I understand what I did. I do understand, however, the reason it is being done and it is all about mysterious code breaking and dependencies. Having been excessively frustrated in the past over the ridiculous dependencies in RPMs, I can only imagine that the problem goes much deeper to this level. Perhaps this new frustration will help resolve old frustrations. The short of it seems to be that all dependencies must be spelled out. This removes some of the "magic" from the process and I think that is good.

Re: Compiling from source fails (DSO)

I got it working with ./configure LIBS=-lX11 after almost going insane with reading and editing the makefilles, merely guessing what to do.
Would be nice to know how things work though even if I'm quite happy with just making it work for now.
    You can't know it all..

    Hi Guys,

Could I also ask for some help with a similar issue please?

I'm trying to compile QLC from source via SVN on fedora 14 x64. I've managed to overcome a couple of issues by checking forums and googling, but I'm stuck on this one.

Below is the last section of the output from make:
