No sound post install on Alienware M11x.

Hello guys,

I'm new here and wanted to know if anyone can help me resolve this issue.

I am loving the opensource driver as I don't have to switch to "discrete" mode in BIOS to get 3D support as I would have to with Ubuntu. (M11x has switchable graphics which is not supported by the nvidia proprietary driver for linux) I need some help with the audio though. In case of Ubuntu 10.04 I had to download and install realtek HD drivers for linux from

http://www.realtek.com/Downloads/dow...&GetDown=false

I cannot do the same for Fedora as I get compile errors.

Quote:
Makefile:535: /usr/src/kernels/2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64/arch//Makefile: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64/arch//Makefile'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernels/2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64'
make: *** [compile] Error 2
This is after I run the install script as specified in the "Readme".

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong. Thanks.

PS: Here is my system config .

Edit:

It works. I just realized that sound is heard when the laptop is connected to an external speaker. Internal speakers still don't work. I don't know how to fix this (probably fix the switches somewhere another mixer gui or via command line) and I don't really care as the internal speakers aren't that great and I almost never use them.

Re: No sound post install on Alienware M11x.

I installed F13 on my M11xR2 last night. I have not finished tweaking it yet. It is just running essentially whatever is supported by the latest updates. When I did the setup process, I included the network updates respository so it got an updated version of everything from the git-go.

Wireless isn't working because I haven't set up the "non-free stuff" repository yet. But the sound works fine as does video, generally speaking. I get desktop effects, but I am unsure what video driver is in operation. I see Nouveau and i915 are both loaded but I have no idea which is active though I suspect it is the i915.

There is another thread charting the progress of hardware support and work-arounds in this forum, so search "M11x" and you will see it.

BTW, the sound works with the newer kernel but not the original and subsequent. I would really like to get "M11x tweaks" documented pretty well so we can get a setup guide put together.

I am not going to tweak this install just yet as I am going to re-work the Win7ult install first. I noticed that it shipped with 3 partitions -- one is diagnostic, one is recovery and the other was main system. Win7 knows how to shrink its own partitions which is nice, so I shrunk it down to make the majority of space available to Linux. But then I decided to shrink down the recovery partition as it wastes lots of space, but I found that while Win7 knows how to shrink and expand, it doesn't know how to move. But rather than mess with various partition utilities, I am just going to wipe the drive like I do with everything else.

(Added note: I just checked out my partition usage. Hilarious surprise. I didn't specify where to install... I let it decide on its own. It installed within the 10GB space between the recovery and the Win7 partition! Hahaha. Hilarious.)

Anyway, let's take any knowledge or experience you are accumulating over to the other thread.
