not able to enable synaptics touchpad

Okay here is a good one. I am running KDE and i am trying to use the instructions found here

to enable the touchpad tapppping. I have done it this way before successfully but now i seem to be having a problem. When i started all i had was a 10-synaptics.fdi file that just had the word synaptics on it...then when i tried to modify it the only change that took place were the addition of 1 2 3 after it.

I've tried over and over with different editors with the same result and no touchpad tapping. Could someone help me fix this? Thank you so much in advance...

I was having similar problems with fluxbox. I wound up just making a script to do it from command line.

synclient TapButton1=1
synclient TapButton2=2
synclient TapButton3=3

Not sure why it wasn't working otherwise, but it was as easy to do it that way and I don't use the laptop enough to spend time searching.
