Will F13 ease video card woes

Will Fedora 13 provide quick video by either

1) coming with an open source driver for nvidia or ati which is fast
or
2) enable support for the easy install of proprietary drivers for above

Most distros, worth their salt, provide option 2
Will the unfortunate dogma of fedora devs keep fedora in the dark (or rather, slow) ages?

1) Not in immediate future
2) Fedora already does
3) If you're not happy about Fedora's philosophy, there are plenty of distros to switch to.

Re: Will F13 ease video card woes

I'm having great luck with nouveau and ati open source drivers. I still haven't installed a binary blob, although I may have to do it on one machine, apps like blender still have a ways to go using nouveau.

ROFL
ati radeon - no chance
nividea - apparently it is possible in some cases but no success in mine

It is plain sailing with ubuntu, mandriva, pclos etc
but apparently there is some 'really worthwhile' reason for it being a nightmare with recent fedora realeases

Re: Will F13 ease video card woes

Fedora uses the latest xorg, F13 will have 1.8. ATI catalyst has only recently got around to using 1.7, meaning, if you want to use ATI proprietary graphics you have to use a distro that has older versions of xorg, like the distros you mentioned.
Nvidia binary blobs are easily installed using Leigh's instructions. Even simpler if you copy & paste the instructions. This is the small price you pay for running bleeding edge software.

Re: Will F13 ease video card woes

Read what Fedora's all about, directly from the FedoraProject site:

Quote:
Why Is the Fedora Project Different?

We try to always do the right thing, and provide only free and open source software. We will fight to protect and promote solutions that anyone can use and redistribute. To this end, we use only free and open source software to power the Fedora infrastructure itself.
In short, Nvidia and ATI don't subscribe to free & open source, so there's always going to be a 3rd. party repository and some tweaking necessary with Fedora, unless the Nouveau drivers do the trick.

It isn't just a fedora issue

Now that buntu has caught up they have the same issue with nouveau

All the other distro's using nouveau will have similar issues

Re: Will F13 ease video card woes

Just upgraded from F11 to F13 and nouveau works fine then installed the nvidia-akmod module and works fine also.

Using a nvidia 8600GT.
