Re: RHEL6 in VBOX320beta1 on F14(F13 kernel)

F13-tc1-live.

Booted up in f13 vbox 3.2.0 host. Ran good except for
some abrt popup about a segfault caused gnome-panel not to come up.
I created a launcher for a terminal and started gnome-panel and the gui come up.

The main problem, it took 30 minutes to boot.
But f13 should be a good sub for RELE6 / CentOS6 virtual servers with newer, more secure, and less buggy sever software.

Re: RHEL6 in VBOX320beta1 on F14(F13 kernel)

how are you using f14 when f13 isn't even released yet - or are you running the newly arranged rawhide that won't make it into f13 but is being developed in parallel to become f14?

and yeah rhel6b1 runs fine under virtualbox 3.2b1, better than f12 it would seem.

i still think i'd use ubuntu LTS in favour or centos6, its nice to have something stable but rhel seems to go too far and you have 5 years of ancient software, which was already out-of-date when it was new.

binary compatibility is nice, but at least provide some upgrades in 5 years, i mean 2.6.18 kernel is just being replaced in 2011?!

Re: RHEL6 in VBOX320beta1 on F14(F13 kernel)

Well, that is what LTS is about. No major changes to avoid the unknown problems.
CestOS6 / RHEL6 will be very good and a big jump in software.
I am just a little disappointed they didn't grab the current server software as it is there now and it is stable and just as bug free (if not more than) the versions that have been out for a year.

My theory is that they had to stay will a LTS kernel 32. Hence the older f12 server software.
The 33 kernel has turned out to be good but probably not LTS by Kernel.org.
And I think 34 is broken. That's why there hasn't been any compiled for f14 (although 34 reached rc6 just as theeir data center went down), and 34-rc6 has several major fixes for ext4, paging, and more KMS.
So my pick will be f14 host with f13 or f14 guests. But it will only be safe for about 2 years and a bug could pop up anytime.

So I reckon the true unbreakable Linux is still some years away and many things could happen before then.
I think Red missed a very big feather in their Hat.

Re: RHEL6 in VBOX320beta1 on F14(F13 kernel)

debian5 was like that - by the time it was released most of the software was already over a year old.

i think i'm going to skip f13 myself and go with f14, my f12 is working so well, i can wait another 6 months for an upgrade.
