Gimp file viewer does not work on network shares

While I can access my windows network shares fine using the native Fedora file viewer and I can open an image from the remote (windows xp) box via that browser using gimp as the open choice when I navigate to the same My documents directory Using the file open function in Gimp...I get told that it is not a directory
