enable desktop effects freezes fedora 12 - please help!!
Hii.
I'm brand new to Fedora and Linux in general. I am using Fedora 12 64 bit on a Dell Optiplex 755 with Intel motherboard and integrated Q35 vga card.
Fedora seems to be working fine however when I enable desktop effects, the machine completely freezes within 3 seconds and doesn't respond to anything other than a hardware reboot.
I've checked lspci and various other commands and direct3d is definitely enabled.
I've also added the line nomodeset on the very last line on the boot, conf in grub but it didnt make a difference.
I'm determined for this to work and so I can banish Windows forever so please help me to get this to work! I've done plenty of googling!
Thanks in advance

Re: enable desktop effects freezes fedora 12 - please help!!
What are my options guys? by a new graphics card? This seems extreme?
Can anyone recommend a good cheap (and extremely quiet) VGA card that will work?
Thanks

Fedora works fine but you can't get rid of Windows forever unless Desktop Effects works
Have you installed the proper graphics drivers?

Re: enable desktop effects freezes fedora 12 - please help!!
Thanks for the reply.
I assumed that Fedora 12 detected by VGA card and installed the correct driver?
I'm new to Linux so not sure how to double check it is the latest version?
I'd like the desktop effects so I can use the cube etc so it improves on the experience. The 3d stuff in Windows worked ok.
I've checked linux intel drivers website and it's pretty confusing to say the least, any help gratefully appreciated.

Re: enable desktop effects freezes fedora 12 - please help!!
Fedora install will give you a basic video driver at best. Find out what video card you have. Open a terminal and type
Code:
lspci | grep -i vga
For example, for the computer that I'm currently using.
Code:
[glenn@phenomu ~]$ lspci | grep -i vga
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)
I have an NVidia card so obviously I would need the proper NVidia drivers, probably kmod-nvidia-xxx. My laptop has an Intel adapter and Desktop Effects work well. The driver, I believe, is x11-xorg-drv-intel.

Re: enable desktop effects freezes fedora 12 - please help!!
Thanks, the output is:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
I then tried:
yum list akmod-\* \*-drv\* kmod-\* dkms-\*
then as root, I typed:
yum install xorg-x11-drv-intel-devel.x86_64
I installed everything rebooted but still the same problem. I assume I haven't installed the driver correctly?

You don't want devel. Try yum install xorg-x11-drv-intel and see if that does anything for you.

Re: enable desktop effects freezes fedora 12 - please help!!
Thanks, however:
xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.9.1-1.fc12.x86_64 already installed and latest version
I've done loads of googling and it does seem that there is a problem with enabling compiz with intel...
It doesn't help that it just freezes the machine and you have to do a cold boot!
All I can think is to buy a passive cooling graphics card and pray that that works or try a different distro...
Thanks for your help

I don't see 82Q35 in there, but maybe it is supported and the man pages are just not up to date.

Also it shows all options that can be configured like DRI.
Quote:
VideoRam integer
This option specifies the amount of system memory to use for
graphics, in KB.
The default is 8192 if AGP allocable memory is < 128 MB, 16384
if < 192 MB, 24576 if higher. DRI require at least a value of
16384. Higher values may give better 3D performance, at expense
of available system memory.
