cannot get Places>network to connect to my windows shares

I am running F12 as guest on VMWare Player. My host and other computers ( XP, Vista , WIn7) are on network named workgroup.

I am able to log into my network computers from F12 using : Places>server> Ip> P/W etc . No problem with internet access also.

I am unable to connect to workgroup using Places>Network>Windows Network. Each time it gives the response "unable to obtain shares from server "

I only need F12 to connect to windows , don't need the other way around.

I can live with Places>server connection but am wondering why places>network does not function and whether there is any way I can fix it. I did notice that in smbconf a) the default workgroup name is not the same as mine , b) the interface is lo, eth0 but my NIC is eth1 and all the ip's are not the same as my computers. My eth0 is inactive.

What should I do next ?

tks
