Avahi-Daemon Errors

I have searched the forums and google and this was supposed to have been fixed in Fedora 10.

On my Fedora 12 Server I still have messages spewing over and over that say

Mar 9 09:07:35 penguin1 avahi-daemon[8689]: Invalid query packet.
Mar 9 09:07:35 penguin1 avahi-daemon[8689]: Invalid query packet.
Mar 9 09:22:53 penguin1 avahi-daemon[8689]: Invalid query packet.
Mar 9 09:22:54 penguin1 avahi-daemon[8689]: Invalid query packet.
Mar 9 09:22:54 penguin1 avahi-daemon[8689]: Invalid query packet.

No IP is logged or anything making these messages worthless.

I am sharing via afp, samba and nfs to Snow Leopard machines. I also have FIOS dvr's boxes on my network. So these errors give me No insight as to who is causing the problem

Any one have a way to just turn these off from logging if they are just info messages ?

Re: Avahi-Daemon Errors

This seems to be a problem with many users. I see it all over the net (avahi forums, here, Debian forums, etc...).

The odd part is that nobody ever seems to respond when people post questions. This holds true even on the avahi forums!

This message is a useless message as it does not give you an IP address of the host that sent the original query and basically gives you no way to track down what the problem is.

To make matters worse even the developers are not responding when asked how to get rid of the messages in your log files.

In my own Fedora 12 install and some of my co-works running Fedora 12 we get 3 lines every 3 to 5 minutes! My logs are full of these garbage messages.

Best bet is to go to the avahi community page and select the bug tracking, IRC, Mail lists, etc... to follow this issue. I have added links below:

Avahi Community page:

http://avahi.org/wiki/AvahiCommunity

[EDIT]

Seems like the bug tracker at avahi.org has some idea of what is happening. Take a look at this bug:

http://avahi.org/ticket/284

Not sure if this applies to you but it mentions Mac OSX (Snow Leopard) on the network as a culprit of the message. In our network we do have some Mac's running Snow Leopard so it seems to apply for us.

Re: Avahi-Daemon Errors

I think is what is causing my VPN to screw up. They did some updates to this that seem to coincide with the 2.6.32.11-99 kernel. I disabled it, and my system is a lot more stable.

Re: Avahi-Daemon Errors

There are some tools that may or may not shed light on the issue.

yum install avahi-tools

http://linux.die.net/man/1/avahi-discover
http://linux.die.net/man/1/avahi-resolve
http://linux.die.net/man/1/avahi-publish
http://linux.die.net/man/1/avahi-browse
http://linux.die.net/man/1/pabrowse
http://linux.die.net/man/5/avahi.service
http://linux.die.net/man/5/avahi-daemon.conf

Dump the services available
Quote:
avahi-browse --dump-db
And start browsing one by one to see which ones are broken.

ps: I know nothing about networking, those comments you take it and use it at your own risk.

oops! don't do that way.

Quote:
ps aux | grep -i avahi
Get the name of the app running the avahi service and try browsing that

Quote:
$ ps aux | grep -i avahi
avahi 1328 0.0 0.0 3000 1538 ? S Apr30 0:00 avahi-daemon: running [Me.local]
avahi 1230 0.0 0.0 3000 346 ? Ss Apr30 0:00 avahi-daemon: chroot helper
500 7367 0.0 0.0 4220 748 pts/0 S+ 11:50 0:00 grep -i avahi
The error message gave you the PID of the process so you can see what it is running it LoL

avahi-discover may be better to browse those things.

The documentation may be helpful also.
