Help fixing broken "tap" feature for synaptic touchpad under KDE

I've encountered some problems after installing kde alongside gnome in my Fedora 12 64 bit laptop: I can't enable my trackpad's "tap" functionality under KDE using systemsettings (whereas gnome's gui option works as advertised.)

Also, I'd like to enable tapping under KDM / GDM if it's possible.

It's not actually broken just the way Fedora is configured.

that kinda sounds broke to me. It make no logic to disable a necessary function by default very poor design.
