Installation on laptop with no monitor

My friend has an old laptop (256 RAM, 1.5 GHz Intel I think, 50 GB) and I am trying to install some linux distro on it. However, the monitor is broken and I can't see a damn thing... Is there a way to connect it to my monitor during the installation?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm a newb...

Most laptops have a vga port built into it so you can hook a regular monitor to it. Have you tried doing it?

Yes, but there is no output. Works only in windows (laptop has XP on it). Toggle keys don't work either...
