What is the best way to install OpenOffice 3.2 in Fedora 12?

What is the best way to install OpenOffice 3.2 in Fedora 12?

I currently have 3.1.1 installed, done as part of the install process plus yum updates since then.

I've heard that 3.2 gives much better docx support. I just loaded a .docx file into my current version of OpenOffice, and it looked a bit munged.

    Hello,
I don't know if this is the best way to get 3.2 but it is pretty easy:
DO NOT RUN THE FOLLOWING COMMAND
    Code:
su -c 'yum --enablerepo=rawhide groupinstall office'
This pulls in 80+ packages but openoffice.org 3.2 will be among them.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR OPENOFFICE.ORG 3.2 FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW.

If you don't want to download rawhide packages you could download it from http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#tested-full

    Hope this helps,

    Ky

I did this, but now the computer is acting dodgy when it boots. The first few boots got stuck on the "f" graphic on the blue screen. The fourth time I booted, I hit escape early on, and it bypassed this blue screen and booted, but only after some errors.

It does now have OpenOffice 3.2, but I note it's no better at reading my sample .docx file than 3.1.1. was.

If the computer is now going to be very hard to boot, then I'm in trouble. Is there a simple way of undoing the yum install of the 80 packages and putting the computer back the way it was before?

You can to undo any transaction of yum using its history feature. Uh, you can to take a look here for a How To.

I've undone the update, and the booting problem remains. At least I've established that hitting the escape key as soon as the "blue" screen appears is a reliable workaround.

I don't know why the update prompted it, but I think the boot problem might be something to do with a failed attempt to install the nvidia drivers which was undone in a rather ad-hoc manner. Some of the error messages mention the kmod-nvidia module. I'll have another go to install nvidia on Sunday and see if that fixes the problem.

Edit: Oh no. Now my mobile phone won't mount on the computer as a USB hard drive. It wouldn't mount on Fedora 4, but would always mount fine on the Fedora 12 machine. Now I have no way of putting music on the damn thing.

It looks like I'm going to have to do a clean install of Fedora 12 and start from scratch. Oh hell, that's a whole day gone

Unfortunately I have much bigger troubles than updating openoffice now

---------- Post added at 04:28 PM CST ---------- Previous post was at 04:14 PM CST ----------

It seems that the computer is refusing to undo the installation done by the command:

    Code:
su -c 'yum --enablerepo=rawhide groupinstall office'
    If I issue the command:

    Code:
    yum history undo 73
then I get the following output, and the installations/updates are not undone. Please can anyone tell me how to undo these so that my computer will boot properly and I can use my phone :
    Code:
    Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile

You can only downgrade to the previous version, not several versions earlier.
And only use fedora repos when doing major surgery.

Anyway, to late now, use next time.
It's time for f12 and 1/2 hand picked rpm's or re-install from what I see.

    P.S. KDE is on you.
