    Why do you need anti-virus?

JN4's kidding. There's anti-virus software available but it's to protect Windows machines from any viruses that might be passed through a linux box, since almost no viruses are out there that will affect linux.

Avast and AVG have no-cost versions available, I believe, and ClamAV is available in the repositories.

Yes. I'm sorry. It is a usual first question.

Now, let's talk about disk defragging!

What happens if I install a virus in Wine? Could that be a possible avenue for damaging a Linux system or would it simply be benign?

Yeah but even losing the user account would have a minimal suck factor.

Fedora's clamav package will install clamav, but it will not configure it. csmart has posted a very useful script for getting clamav up and running here. This will configure clamav for you and set the clamd daemon going, but it will not install the pretty klamav graphical interface, so install that as well if you'd prefer not to type commands into a command line terminal.

As I work on a mainly Windows-based network I scan my filesystems with clamav every week or so.

I don't understand. Why is there no such a need?

On Windows we need software like Norton or other virus killer.

    What about Linux?

It's so safe that i even don't need a protector?

Because there are no known Linux viruses "in the wild". At least: none so far as I have ever heard.

Not A-V, but you should run at least a default firewall.

I have not used an antivirus program since 2004. Even when I was on windows, I made sure I only visited trusted sites, and manually removed any malicious programs from registries that used to crop in from using flash drives (ah, the good old days). So I still stand by it, I do not see the need for an antivirus program running in the background when you are being careful (especially when I was running a pentium 3 machine with 64 mb ram in the said year )

If there is no known virus, why need to set up a firewall?

What's the default firewall I should run?
